Cyclic Processes And Isolated Systems

Un sistema che non scambia calore e non lavora sull'ambiente circostante è chiamato sistema isolato. La variazione dell'energia interna per tali sistemi è pari a zero.
Nei sistemi non isolati, l'energia interna può essere costante solo se il processo seguito è ciclico.
Supponiamo che un sistema termodinamico, come l'aria all'interno dei polmoni, alla pressione e al volume iniziali, espanso in un nuovo stato finale, ritorni al suo stato iniziale in un processo termodinamico. Tale processo è chiamato processo ciclico. 
In questo processo, l'energia interna del gas rimane costante; quindi, il lavoro svolto è uguale al trasferimento netto di calore.
In un diagramma pV, tale processo ciclico è rappresentato da un percorso chiuso. Si supponga che il lavoro svolto lungo il primo percorso sia W1 e che il lavoro svolto lungo il secondo percorso sia W2. Il lavoro di rete svolto in un processo ciclico è rappresentato dall'area tra questi due percorsi chiusi.
È positivo se il processo segue un ciclo in senso orario ed è negativo quando segue un ciclo in senso antiorario.

Nel caso di un sistema non isolato, la variazione dell'energia interna è zero solo se il processo è ciclico. Un processo termodinamico è considerato ciclico se il sistema subisce una serie di cambiamenti e ritorna al suo stato iniziale.

Consideriamo un processo ciclico che ritorna al suo stato iniziale, subendo un processo a quattro fasi. Il trasferimento di calore lungo ogni percorso è di 40 J, -80 J, -20 J e 100 J. Qual è il lavoro netto fatto per questo processo?

Le quantità conosciute sono il trasferimento di calore per ogni fase. La quantità sconosciuta è l'ammontare netto di lavoro svolto per questo processo ciclico.

Secondo la prima legge della termodinamica, la variazione dell'energia interna del sistema è la differenza tra il trasferimento netto di calore nel sistema e il lavoro netto svolto dal sistema. Poiché la variazione dell'energia interna è zero, l'ammontare netto di lavoro svolto è uguale al trasferimento netto di calore. Il trasferimento netto di calore è la somma del trasferimento di calore per ciascun percorso, pari a 40 J. Quindi, il lavoro netto svolto è di 40 J.

A cyclic thermodynamic process returns a system to its initial state. In a cycle, the change in internal energy is zero. An isolated system is different because it has zero heat exchange and zero work, so its internal energy stays constant.

For a non-isolated system, the internal energy change is zero only when the process is cyclic. The first law of thermodynamics relates internal energy, heat transfer, and work. It states that the change in internal energy is the difference between the net heat transferred into the system and the net work done by the system.

The example here uses a four-step cyclic process. The heat transfer along the four paths is 40 J, -80 J, -20 J, and 100 J. The question is to find the net work done for the full cycle. The net heat transfer is the sum of the heat for each step, which is 40 J.

Because the process is cyclic, the change in internal energy is zero. That means the net work done equals the net heat transfer. So the net work done is 40 J. This positive value means the system does more work than work done on it. The heat energy supplied to the system is used to do external work.
