Cellular Differentiation

Durante la differenziazione cellulare le cellule non specializzate assumono caratteristiche caratteristiche, come la forma, le dimensioni o la composizione proteica della membrana, per svolgere funzioni distinte nel corpo.
Un ovulo fecondato o zigote è altamente proliferativo e totipotente, cioè può differenziarsi per formare tutti i tipi di cellule.
Quando lo zigote subisce una serie di divisioni, le cellule figlie perdono la loro totipotenza e si differenziano per formare cellule specializzate nell'embrione, come cellule muscolari, neuroni, epidermide della pelle, cellule cardiache e cellule del fegato.
Sebbene tutte queste cellule del corpo contengano lo stesso genoma, esprimono alcuni geni mentre ne spengono altri. Ciò consente loro di sintetizzare le proteine necessarie per svolgere funzioni tessuto-specifiche.

Come si sviluppa un organismo complesso come un essere umano da una singola cellula? Tutto inizia da un unico ovulo fecondato che dorigine a una vasta gamma di tipi cellulari, come cellule nervose, cellule muscolari e cellule epiteliali che caratterizzano l'adulto. Durante lo sviluppo e l'etadulta, la differenziazione cellulare porta le cellule ad assumere la loro morfologia e fisiologia finali. La differenziazione il processo attraverso il quale le cellule non specializzate si specializzano per svolgere funzioni distinte. Lo zigote una cellula staminale totipotente con un potenziale molto elevato di differenziazione che puformare tutti i tipi cellulari e produrre un nuovo organismo multicellulare completo. Man mano che lo zigote subisce successive divisioni cellulari, genera cellule staminali pluripotenti (CSP) con un potenziale di differenziazione pilimitato. Le CSP danno origine a poche cellule staminali adulte che si dividono ulteriormente e diventano pidifferenziate definitivamente. Quando una cellula si differenzia, pusubire significativi cambiamenti di dimensione, forma, attivitmetabolica e funzione complessiva. A partire dall'ovulo fecondato, tutte le cellule del corpo contengono lo stesso DNA, ma ogni tipo di cellula legge solo le porzioni di DNA rilevanti per la sua funzione. Diversi fattori come gli ormoni o le molecole segnale attivano la differenziazione cellulare e, in risposta, attivano l'espressione di geni specifici mentre ne disattivano altri. Il meccanismo principale con cui i geni vengono attivati o disattivati attraverso i fattori di trascrizione. Un fattore di trascrizione una classe di proteine che si lega a geni specifici sulla molecola di DNA e promuove o inibisce la loro trascrizione. Cellular differentiation turns unspecialized cells into specialized cells with specific jobs. This process helps a complex organism, such as a human, develop from a single fertilized egg into a body with many cell types. Nerve cells, muscle cells, and epithelial cells are examples of the final cell types that appear during development.

A zygote is the first cell after fertilization. It is a totipotent stem cell, which means it has very high differentiation potential and can form all cell types and even produce a whole new multicellular organism. As the zygote divides, it gives rise to pluripotent stem cells, or PSCs, which have a more limited ability to differentiate. PSCs then produce a few adult stem cells that keep dividing until they become more terminally differentiated.

As cells differentiate, they can change in size, shape, metabolic activity, and overall function. Even though the body’s cells contain the same DNA, each cell type only reads the parts of the DNA that are relevant to its role. This selective reading helps each cell become suited to its own job.

Hormones and signaling molecules can trigger differentiation. In response, specific genes are turned on while others are turned off. Transcription factors, which are proteins that bind to specific genes on DNA, control this switch by promoting or inhibiting transcription. The expression of the right genes leads to the proteins needed for a particular cell function and supports cellular differentiation.
