L'attrito secco si verifica quando due superfici solide scivolano l'una contro l'altra senza alcuna lubrificazione o fluido presente. Questo causa resistenza quando si spingono oggetti lungo una superficie, come fa un giardiniere che spinge una carriola. La forza applicata per muovere il carrello causa attrito secco tra la ruota e il terreno.

Prima che la carriola inizi a muoversi, la forza di attrito statico agisce tangenzialmente alla superficie di contatto, opponendosi alla forza che sta per indurre il moto. Questa forza di attrito impedisce alla carriola di scivolare e aiuta a mantenere la stabilità. È importante notare che la forza di attrito statico è presente solo quando non c'è moto relativo tra le due superfici.

Quando la carriola sta per scivolare, la massima forza di attrito statico all'interfaccia è direttamente proporzionale alla forza normale. Questa relazione è definita dal coefficiente di attrito statico, che dipende dai tipi di materiali a contatto e dalla ruvidità delle loro superfici.

Curiosamente, la forza di attrito statico è indipendente dall'area di contatto quando la pressione normale è entro un determinato intervallo che evita la deformazione o il danneggiamento delle superfici a contatto. Ciò significa che anche se l'area di contatto tra la ruota e il terreno cambia, la forza di attrito statico rimane costante fintanto che la pressione normale rimane entro questo particolare intervallo.

Tuttavia, se la carriola si muove a una velocità molto bassa sulla superficie, la forza di attrito cinetico diventa approssimativamente uguale alla massima forza di attrito statico. Questo perché il movimento lento consente una maggiore interazione tra le superfici, portando ad un aumento della resistenza.

Dry friction is the resistance between two solid surfaces that move against each other without lubrication or any fluid. A common example is a gardener pushing a wheelbarrow across the ground. The wheel and the ground create dry friction that slows the motion.

Before the wheelbarrow starts to move, static friction acts at the contact surface. Static friction is the force that opposes motion before slipping begins, and it helps keep the wheelbarrow stable. It is present only when there is no relative motion between the two surfaces.

As the wheelbarrow is about to slip, the maximum static friction depends on the normal force. The normal force is the push that surfaces exert on each other at the contact point. This maximum static friction is described by the coefficient of static friction, which depends on the materials in contact and on how rough their surfaces are.

Static friction also does not depend on contact area when the normal pressure stays within a range that avoids deformation or damage. So, even if the wheel and the ground touch over a larger or smaller area, the static friction can stay the same under those conditions. Once the wheelbarrow begins to slide, kinetic friction takes over.

Kinetic friction is the friction force during motion. It is also proportional to the normal force, but it is usually smaller than the maximum static friction. At very low speed, however, kinetic friction can become nearly equal to the maximum static friction because the surfaces have more time to interact.

The coefficient of kinetic friction mainly depends on surface properties and the surrounding environment. Temperature, humidity, and surface contamination can change its value. Knowing how static and kinetic friction respond to material type, surface roughness, and environmental conditions helps in choosing the right materials for different uses.
