I problemi di attrito a secco possono essere classificati in tre tipi.
Il primo tipo è il movimento imminente non apparente. Consideriamo una forza applicata a una cassa.

Types of Friction Problems

L'attrito è un concetto essenziale in fisica, ingegneria e vita quotidiana. È la forza che contrasta il moto relativo o la tendenza di tale moto tra due superfici a contatto. Uno dei tipi più comuni di attrito riscontrati in varie applicazioni è l'attrito secco. I problemi di attrito secco possono essere ampiamente suddivisi in tre tipi, ognuno con caratteristiche e sfide uniche.

Il primo tipo di problema di attrito secco riguarda situazioni in cui non vi è alcun moto imminente evidente. Un esempio lampante di ciò è quando si applica una forza a una cassa ma questa rimane ferma. Le forze di attrito sviluppate tra il pavimento e la cassa contrastano la forza applicata e mantengono la cassa ferma.

Per risolvere questo tipo di problema, è necessario considerare le tre incognite coinvolte: la forza normale, la forza di attrito e la forza applicata. Queste incognite possono essere valutate utilizzando le tre equazioni di equilibrio che regolano il sistema. Una volta determinate queste incognite, è possibile calcolare la forza di attrito sviluppata, fornendo informazioni sui fattori che influenzano la stabilità della cassa.
Il secondo tipo di problema di attrito secco riguarda situazioni in cui si verifica un moto imminente in tutti i punti di contatto. Un esempio di questo problema è una scala appoggiata su una parete liscia. In questo scenario, la scala è sull'orlo di scivolare e bisogna determinare l'angolo più piccolo a cui la scala può essere posizionata senza scivolare.

Per risolvere questo problema, è necessario identificare innanzitutto le quattro incognite presenti: le forze normali in entrambi i punti di contatto, la forza di attrito alla base della scala e l'angolo. Queste incognite possono essere determinate utilizzando le tre equazioni di equilibrio e una delle equazioni di attrito statico che si applicano ai punti di contatto. Una volta calcolati questi valori, è possibile valutare l'angolo più piccolo a cui la scala può essere posizionata senza scivolare.

Il terzo tipo di problema di attrito secco riguarda situazioni in cui si verifica un moto imminente solo in alcuni, ma non in tutti, i punti di contatto. Un esempio di questo tipo di problema è una struttura a due elementi soggetta a una forza orizzontale sconosciuta. In questo caso, la struttura potrebbe scivolare da un'estremità mentre rimane ferma all'altra.

Per risolvere questo problema, è necessario identificare le sette incognite coinvolte: le forze normali in entrambi i punti di contatto, le forze di attrito ad entrambe le estremità, la forza orizzontale applicata e le reazioni delle forze sui supporti. Sei equazioni di equilibrio e una delle due possibili equazioni di attrito statico possono essere utilizzate per determinare queste incognite. Risolvendo queste equazioni è possibile determinare la forza orizzontale necessaria per causare il movimento nella struttura.

All'aumentare della forza applicata alla struttura, possono verificarsi due possibilità: scivolamento all'estremità sinistra mentre l'estremità destra rimane ferma o viceversa. Analizzando queste possibilità, è possibile comprendere meglio i fattori che influenzano il moto della struttura e le condizioni in cui essa scivolerà.

Dry friction problems often focus on crates, ladders, and frames that are close to slipping. Dry friction is the force that resists relative motion, or the tendency for motion, between two surfaces in contact. In many physics and engineering problems, this force helps keep an object still or defines the point where motion is about to begin.

One common case has no clear impending motion. A force may be applied to a crate, but the crate stays at rest. The friction force between the floor and the crate opposes the applied force and keeps the crate stationary. To solve this kind of problem, the normal force, the friction force, and the applied force are the three unknowns. They can be found using the three equilibrium equations for the system.

A second type of problem reaches impending motion at every contact point. A ladder against a smooth wall is a good example. The ladder is just about to slip, and the goal is to find the smallest angle that still keeps it from sliding. This setup has four unknowns: the normal forces at both contact points, the friction force at the base, and the angle. The three equilibrium equations and one static friction equation are used to solve for these values.

A third type involves impending motion at some contact points, but not at others. A two-member frame with an unknown horizontal force is one example. The frame may slip at one end while the other end remains stationary. This case has seven unknowns, including the normal forces, the friction forces at both ends, the applied horizontal force, and the reaction forces at the supports. Six equilibrium equations and one of the two possible static friction equations are used to determine the force needed to start movement. As the applied force increases, the frame may slip on the left while the right side stays fixed, or the reverse may happen.
