Considera un martinetto a vite con filettatura quadrata. L'applicazione di una forza sulla sua maniglia provoca un momento torsionale, che provoca un movimento imminente verso l'alto della vite. Ciò si ottiene superando l'attrito statico tra le filettature della vite e del martinetto.
Considera il filo completamente srotolato come un blocco a contatto con la scanalatura del martinetto e disegna il suo diagramma a corpo libero.
Il momento torsionale produce una forza orizzontale che spinge la filettatura mobile verso l'alto l'inclinazione fissa della filettatura del martinetto e il carico applica una forza assiale sulla filettatura.

Un martinetto a vite filettata quadrata è un dispositivo meccanico ampiamente utilizzato per sollevare carichi pesanti o applicare una considerevole forza. La sua funzione si basa sulla conversione della forza applicata alla maniglia in un momento torsionale, che causa un movimento pendente verso l'alto della vite. Questo movimento è ottenuto superando la forza di attrito statico tra i filetti della vite e il martinetto.

Per comprendere meglio come funziona un martinetto a vite, consideriamo il filetto completamente esteso come un blocco a contatto con la scanalatura del martinetto. Disegnando un diagramma di corpo libero di questa situazione, possiamo analizzare le forze che agiscono sul sistema.

Il momento torsionale prodotto dalla forza applicata alla maniglia, genera una forza orizzontale che spinge il filetto mobile sulla pendenza fissa del filetto del martinetto. Allo stesso tempo, il carico sollevato applica una forza assiale sul filetto.

La scanalatura del martinetto esercita una forza di reazione sul filetto della vite. Questa forza di reazione comprende componenti sia normali che di attrito, che sono correlate attraverso il coefficiente di attrito. L'angolo di attrito statico per il movimento pendente può essere determinato trovando l'arcotangente del coefficiente di attrito.

Upward Impending Motion

A square-threaded screw jack lifts heavy loads by turning handle force into a twisting moment. Its upward motion depends on overcoming static friction between the screw threads and the jack. To study this motion, the thread can be treated as if it were a block on the groove of the jack after the thread is completely unraveled.

A free-body diagram helps show the forces acting on this simplified system. The force at the handle creates a horizontal force that pushes the movable thread up the fixed incline of the jack thread. At the same time, the load acts downward as an axial force on the thread.

The groove of the jack also pushes back on the screw thread with a reaction force. That reaction force has both normal and frictional parts, and they are linked by the coefficient of friction. The angle of static friction for impending motion is found by taking the inverse tangent of the coefficient of friction.

With these force relationships, equilibrium equations can be written for the horizontal and vertical directions. These equations describe how the applied force, the reaction forces, and the motion of the screw jack are connected. Rearranging the equations in terms of the reaction force and setting them equal leads to the moment equilibrium equation for upward impending motion.

Solving that moment equilibrium equation gives the minimum force needed at the handle to start the screw jack moving upward. This result is useful for understanding how the jack is designed and operated. It also helps the jack lift heavy loads or apply large forces when needed.
