Statistical Analysis: Overview

Un'analisi viene solitamente condotta mediante campionamento replicato o misurazioni ripetute sullo stesso campione. Ciò porta a risultati sparsi piuttosto che a un singolo valore. La differenza tra i risultati ottenuti e il valore vero o atteso, o il valore centrale, è nota come errore in quella misurazione.
Il valore centrale in un insieme di risultati sparsi è la media o la mediana stimata.
La media è il rapporto tra la somma e il numero totale di valori di misurazione replicati. In alternativa, la mediana è il valore medio tra i record, disposti in ordine crescente o decrescente.

Quando effettuiamo misurazioni ripetute sugli stessi campioni o su campioni replicati, osserveremo incongruenze nella grandezza. Queste incoerenze sono chiamate errori. Per classificare e caratterizzare questi risultati e i relativi errori, il ricercatore può utilizzare l'analisi statistica per determinare la qualità delle misurazioni e/o l'idoneità dei metodi.

Uno dei quantificatori statistici più comunemente utilizzati è la media, che è il rapporto tra la somma dei valori numerici di tutti i risultati e il numero totale di risultati. Un altro quantificatore comunemente utilizzato è la mediana, che è il valore medio tra tutti i risultati disposti in ordine crescente o decrescente rispetto ai loro valori numerici. In presenza di valori estremamente grandi o piccoli nel set di dati, la mediana può essere una misura più adatta per il set di dati nel suo complesso. Sia la media che la mediana possono essere misure utili del valore centrale di un insieme di misurazioni. Oltre al valore centrale, l'intervallo è un altro modo per caratterizzare la distribuzione di un insieme di valori. È la differenza numerica tra il valore più alto e più basso in un insieme di risultati.

Statistical analysis helps compare repeated measurements and judge how good the results are. When the same sample is measured again and again, small differences can appear. These differences are called errors. Researchers use statistics to describe the data and to decide whether a method is suitable.

The mean and median are common ways to find the central value of a data set. The mean is the sum of all results divided by the total number of results. The median is the middle value after the results are arranged in order. If a data set has very large or very small values, the median may describe the overall set better.

The range is another way to describe the spread of results. It is the difference between the highest value and the lowest value in the set. A large range often shows that the values are more scattered.

Precision and accuracy are two key ways to describe error. Precision means repeated measurements are close to one another, so the values cluster together. Accuracy means the measurements are close to the true or expected value. A more precise data set usually has a smaller spread, while a more accurate data set has smaller errors.
