Random Error

Gli errori indeterminati o casuali derivano da diverse variabili incontrollabili in misurazioni successive.
Poiché questi errori non possono essere né previsti né stimati, non vengono mai eliminati. A volte è difficile anche identificare le singole fonti di errore. Consideriamo un esempio di errori casuali dovuti al rumore elettrico in uno strumento. Le fluttuazioni possono andare sia in direzione positiva che negativa e differire in grandezza.
A causa di queste variazioni casuali, gli errori indeterminati sono sparsi. Tuttavia, per un grande set di dati, le leggi matematiche della probabilità aiutano a trovare i risultati più probabili nella media o nella mediana.
Tracciando i dati con errori casuali, i valori si distribuiscono in entrambe le direzioni attorno al valore centrale che ricorre più frequentemente. Random error in measurements comes from uncontrollable variables that affect data from one trial to the next. These variables can include changes in the environment, imperfections in an instrument, or the natural variation of the thing being measured. Because the direction and size of the error can change from one measurement to the next, random error is hard to predict, estimate, or describe directly.

Although random error is difficult to remove, its overall effect can be studied in a large data set. One way to do this is to count how often different measurement values appear. This approach helps scientists see patterns in the full set of observations and supports statistical analysis.

For example, repeated temperature measurements in London can be plotted by temperature value and frequency of occurrence. If the variation is truly random, the data form a normal distribution, also called a Gaussian curve. That curve lets students use probability to estimate the mean and the standard deviation, which is the spread around the mean. From there, it becomes possible to test for outliers and draw conclusions about the data set.
