Propagation of Uncertainty from Random Error

In un esperimento, sono spesso necessarie più operazioni aritmetiche. In questo caso, l'incertezza associata alla prima misurazione si propaga alla successiva in una sequenza a cascata.
Conoscere l'incertezza associata a ciascuna misurazione consente di stimare l'incertezza da errori casuali di tutte le operazioni aritmetiche.
Per le operazioni di addizione e sottrazione, l'incertezza assoluta del risultato è la radice quadrata della somma delle incertezze espresse in varianze assolute.
Per le operazioni di moltiplicazione e divisione, l'incertezza relativa nel risultato è la radice quadrata della somma delle incertezze calcolata come varianze relative.
Per l'operazione di funzione esponenziale, l'incertezza relativa nel risultato è l'incertezza relativa del valore di base moltiplicato per l'esponente.

Un esperimento spesso consiste in più di un singolo passaggio. In questo caso, le misurazioni ad ogni passaggio danno luogo a incertezza. Poiché le misurazioni avvengono in fasi successive, l’incertezza in una fase contribuisce necessariamente a quella nella fase successiva. Quando eseguiamo analisi statistiche su questo tipo di esperimenti, dobbiamo imparare a tenere conto della propagazione dell'incertezza da un passaggio a quello successivo. La propagazione dell'incertezza dipende dal tipo di operazione aritmetica eseguita sui valori. Per addizione e sottrazione, la propagazione dell'incertezza richiede di esprimere l'incertezza assoluta del risultato, che è la radice quadrata della somma delle incertezze assolute per tutti i passaggi. Per la moltiplicazione e la divisione, la propagazione dell'incertezza richiede di trovare la radice quadrata della somma delle incertezze relative per tutti i passaggi, e questa radice quadrata è uguale all'incertezza relativa del risultato, nota anche come rapporto tra l'incertezza assoluta del risultato e l’entità del risultato atteso. Per le funzioni esponenziali, propaghiamo l'incertezza moltiplicando la potenza per l'incertezza relativa del valore di base, che quindi equivale all'incertezza relativa del risultato per l'intero set di dati. Uncertainty changes as measurements move through calculations. In a multi-step experiment, each measurement adds some uncertainty. Because the steps happen one after another, the uncertainty from one step carries into the next step and affects the final result.

The way uncertainty is combined depends on the math operation. For addition and subtraction, the final result is reported with absolute uncertainty. Absolute uncertainty is found as the square root of the sum of the absolute uncertainties from all steps. For multiplication and division, the result uses relative uncertainty, which is the absolute uncertainty divided by the expected value.

Exponential functions follow another rule. To propagate uncertainty here, multiply the power by the relative uncertainty of the base value. That gives the relative uncertainty of the full data set. Knowing these rules helps students choose the method that produces the least uncertainty and improves experimental planning.
