Variation of Atmospheric Pressure

La terra è avvolta da strati d'aria, noti come atmosfera. Viene tirato verso il basso verso la superficie dalla gravità ed esercita una pressione nota come pressione atmosferica.
La pressione atmosferica varia con l'altezza e può essere data in termini di peso o densità dell'aria. Tuttavia, dalla legge dei gas ideali, la densità dipende anche dalla pressione.
Supponendo che la temperatura dell'aria e l'accelerazione dovuta alla gravità rimangano costanti con l'altezza e sostituendo l'espressione con densità e riorganizzando l'equazione, si può ottenere il tasso di variazione della pressione con l'altezza.
Qui, le quantità costanti all'interno delle parentesi sono chiamate alfa.

La variazione della pressione atmosferica con l'altezza è particolarmente interessante. La diminuzione della pressione atmosferica con l'aumentare dell'altitudine è dovuta alla diminuzione della forza di gravità per unità di area man mano che ci allontaniamo dalla superficie della Terra.

Assumendo che la temperatura dell'aria sia costante a una data altitudine e che la legge dei gas ideali della termodinamica descriva l'atmosfera in buona approssimazione, è possibile trovare la variazione della pressione atmosferica con l'altezza.

La pressione atmosferica diminuisce esponenzialmente con l'altezza, poiché l'asse y punta verso l'alto dal suolo, e y ha valori positivi nell'atmosfera sopra il livello del mare. La pressione diminuisce di un fattore di 1/e quando l'altezza è 1/α , il che ci dà un'interpretazione fisica per α. Atmospheric pressure and altitude are closely linked. As height increases, atmospheric pressure decreases. This happens because the gravitational force per unit area becomes smaller as we move away from Earth’s surface.

To describe this change, the atmosphere is treated with a constant air temperature at a given altitude. The ideal gas law of thermodynamics is also used as a good approximation for the air. Let p(y) be the atmospheric pressure at height y. The density ρ at y, the temperature T in Kelvin, and the mass m of an air molecule are related to absolute pressure by the ideal gas law.

Using the density from the ideal gas law, the rate of change of pressure with height can be integrated from sea level. The result shows that atmospheric pressure drops exponentially with height. Since the y-axis points upward from the ground, y has positive values above sea level in the atmosphere.

The pressure drops by a factor of 1/e when the height reaches 1/α. This gives a physical meaning to α. The constant 1/α is a length scale that describes how pressure changes with height, and it is often called the pressure scale height.
