La forma di una piccola goccia di liquido può essere considerata sferica, trascurando l'effetto della gravità. Questa goccia può essere ulteriormente considerata come due gocce emisferiche uguali messe insieme a causa della tensione superficiale. Le forze che agiscono sulla goccia sferica sono dovute alla pressione del liquido all'interno della goccia, alla pressione dell'aria all'esterno della goccia e alla forza dovuta alla tensione superficiale che agisce sulle due gocce emisferiche.

dove γ corrisponde alla tensione superficiale. Ricordando che la forza per unità di lunghezza è la tensione superficiale, si ottiene la forza che agisce sul diametro. La differenza tra la pressione all'interno e all'esterno della goccia per la sua superficie data fornisce le forze di pressione nette che agiscono sulla goccia. In equilibrio, le forze interne ed esterne si bilanciano reciproco, indicando che la pressione all'interno della superficie liquida è maggiore della pressione esterna.

Nel caso di una bolla d'aria all'interno di un liquido, questa condizione rimane invariata e la pressione all'interno della bolla d'aria è maggiore della pressione nel liquido circostante. La differenza di pressione attraverso questa interfaccia aria-liquido è proporzionale alla curvatura dell'interfaccia, che a sua volta determina le dimensioni della bolla.

Una vista trasversale di una bolla di sapone mostra due superfici: una a contatto con l'aria all'interno della bolla e l'altra a contatto con l'aria all'esterno della bolla. La pressione all'interno della bolla è maggiore della pressione dell'aria all'esterno della superficie. Inoltre, la pressione all'interno della bolla è inferiore alla pressione dell'aria all'interno della superficie della stessa quantità. Risolvendo queste due condizioni si ottiene la relazione di Young-Laplace per la bolla di sapone.

Excess Pressure Inside a Drop and a Bubble

Surface tension sets the pressure difference in small drops and bubbles. For a tiny liquid drop, gravity can be neglected, so the drop is treated as spherical. It can also be viewed as two equal hemispherical drops joined together by surface tension.

The forces on the drop come from three sources. The liquid inside pushes outward, the air outside pushes inward, and surface tension acts along the diameter between the two hemispheres. Since surface tension is force per unit length, it creates a force that must balance the pressure forces on the drop’s surface area.

At equilibrium, the inward and outward forces balance. This balance shows that the pressure inside the liquid surface is greater than the external pressure. The same idea applies to an air bubble inside a liquid, where the pressure inside the bubble is greater than the pressure in the surrounding liquid.

The pressure difference across the air-liquid interface depends on the curvature of the interface. That curvature also affects the size of the bubble. A soap bubble has two surfaces, one touching the air inside and one touching the air outside. The pressure inside the bubble is greater than the air pressure outside the outer surface, and it is lower than the air pressure inside the inner surface by the same amount. Solving these two conditions gives the Young-Laplace relation for a soap bubble.
