Graphing the Wave Function

Si consideri un'onda sinusoidale che viaggia nella direzione x.

La velocità di fase è la velocità con cui si muove l'onda, mantenendo costante la fase.
Prendendo una derivata rispetto al tempo, si ottiene un'espressione per la velocità di fase.

Se si prende un tempo specifico, ad esempio t = 0, significa che viene scattata una "istantanea" dell'onda, e il grafico ottenuto è la forma dell'onda a t = 0. Questo grafico è chiamato grafico della deformazione rispetto alla posizione e rappresenta la deformazione della particella dalla sua posizione di equilibrio come funzione della posizione. La lunghezza d'onda può essere dedotta da questo grafico. Il punto più alto dell'onda rispetto alla posizione di equilibrio è noto come cresta, mentre il punto più basso è noto come depressione. La distanza tra due depressioni o creste consecutive con la stessa altezza e la stessa pendenza è la lunghezza d'onda di un'onda. Considerando il caso di un'onda trasversale su una corda, il grafico rappresenta la forma reale della corda in un istante di tempo.

D'altra parte, quando viene scelta una coordinata specifica, ad esempio x = 0, il tracciamento dell'equazione d'onda porta a un grafico della deformazione rispetto al tempo. Questo grafico fornisce la deformazione della particella come funzione del tempo. Il periodo dell'onda può essere ottenuto dal grafico. Il tempo impiegato dalla particella per un'oscillazione completa è il periodo dell'onda.

Nell'equazione d'onda, l'argomento della funzione coseno è chiamato fase dell'onda. È una quantità angolare e si misura in radianti. Il valore della fase per qualsiasi valore di x e t determina quale parte del ciclo sinusoidale si verifica in un punto e in un momento specifici. Wave snapshots, period, and phase help describe a sinusoidal wave moving in the positive x-direction. The wave equation depends on both position and time. That is why it can be shown in more than one way.

If time is fixed, such as at t = 0, the graph becomes a snapshot of the wave. This is a displacement versus position graph. It shows the displacement of the particle from equilibrium as a function of position. From this graph, the wavelength can be found. For a transverse wave on a string, the graph shows the actual shape of the string at that instant.

The crest is the highest point of the wave above equilibrium. The trough is the lowest point below equilibrium. The wavelength is the distance between two consecutive crests or two consecutive troughs with the same height and the same slope.

If position is fixed, such as at x = 0, the graph becomes a displacement versus time graph. This graph shows how the particle’s displacement changes with time. The period can be read from it. The period is the time needed for one complete oscillation.

The phase of the wave is the argument of the cosine function. It is an angular quantity measured in radians. The phase tells which part of the sinusoidal cycle is present at a given position and time. A crest occurs when the cosine value is 1, so the phase can be 0, 2π, 4π, 6π, and so on. A trough occurs when the cosine value is −1, so the phase can be π, 3π, 5π, 7π, and so on.

Phase velocity is the speed of the wave when the phase stays constant. It describes how fast the wave pattern moves through space. The expression for phase velocity is given from this condition.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Reading Wave Motion by Its Features

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions. A simplified surface water wave is a good example. The water moves up and down, while the wave disturbance travels horizontally through the medium.
