Speed of a Transverse Wave

Si consideri una fune tesa flessibile in una posizione di equilibrio con una densità di massa lineare μ e una forza di trazione T.

La velocità di un'onda dipende dalle caratteristiche del mezzo. Per esempio, nel caso di una chitarra, le corde vibrano per produrre il suono. The speed of transverse waves on a string depends on the string’s tension and its mass per unit length. A string with more tension has stronger restoring forces. Those forces help pull the string back to straight after it is disturbed, so the wave moves faster.

Mass per unit length is the mass of a string divided by its length. It is also called linear density. Strings on a guitar can have different thicknesses even when they are made of similar material, so they can have different linear densities.

Wave speed matters for stringed musical instruments because it helps determine the frequency of the sound produced along with wavelength. It also connects to other mechanical waves, since many of them follow the same main mathematical expression as waves on a string. Wave speed is a key property of any wave.

The idea of wave speed also explains real-world events. Light waves travel much faster than sound waves in air. That is why a flash from lightning is seen before the clap of thunder is heard.

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
