Un grafico di controllo qualità è un grafico consecutivo di una caratteristica dell'analisi che può fungere da indicatore qualitativo.
La caratteristica specifica dell'analisi viene confrontata con il valore caratteristico noto del materiale di riferimento. Un'ispezione delle condizioni di analisi è necessaria quando il valore misurato non rientra nell'intervallo dei limiti controllati per una deviazione standard selezionata dal valore di riferimento.
I test valutativi sono l'analisi delle prestazioni in più laboratori. Il risultato di ciascun laboratorio viene confrontato con la media dei risultati di tutti i laboratori come riferimento o con un materiale di riferimento certificato. Le tipiche attività di controllo qualità includono la creazione di grafici di controllo qualità, l'esecuzione di test di competenza, la documentazione e l'archiviazione dei risultati.

Il controllo qualità aiuta a tracciare i dati, visualizzare le tendenze e identificare le variazioni, rendendo più facile rilevare le deviazioni che possono influenzare l'accuratezza di un'analisi. Un modo per farlo è generare un grafico di controllo qualità, che traccia i valori di una o più caratteristiche analitiche nel tempo. Queste caratteristiche vengono monitorate e misurate ripetutamente in momenti diversi durante l'analisi. Ogni valore misurato viene confrontato con il valore noto del materiale di riferimento. È richiesta un'ispezione se un valore misurato si trova al di fuori dell'intervallo dei limiti controllati, di solito definiti come la deviazione standard dal valore di riferimento. Se necessario, sono richieste delle modifiche alle condizioni di analisi per mantenere il controllo statistico del sistema.

Il test di competenza è l'analisi simultanea intrapresa su più laboratori. La media dei risultati ottenuti da tutti i laboratori, o un valore di riferimento standard noto, viene utilizzata per confrontare la variazione nei risultati dei singoli laboratori. Il punteggio Z stima questa deviazione dei valori dal valore di riferimento. 

La documentazione e l'archiviazione sono aspetti critici della garanzia della qualità che assicurano la trasparenza e la tracciabilità nel processo di laboratorio. Ogni attività correlata al controllo e alla garanzia della qualità dev’essere adeguatamente documentata, inclusa la custodia dei campioni, la calibrazione degli strumenti, le procedure operative standard e i risultati. Questo processo comporta la creazione di un registro completo che serva da riferimento per i controlli futuri. 

Ogni documento deve chiaramente risalire alla persona responsabile della sua creazione o gestione. Questo spesso richiede che i documenti siano firmati e datati dalla persona coinvolta, aggiungendo responsabilità al processo. Una documentazione adeguata non solo supporta il controllo statistico di un sistema, ma svolge anche un ruolo chiave nell'identificazione delle variazioni nei processi di controllo della qualità. Un archivio accurato garantisce che i dati passati possano essere recuperati, valutati e utilizzati per prendere delle decisioni informate sulle future analisi.

Quality control charts, proficiency testing, and lab records are key parts of quality control in a laboratory. These steps help keep a system under statistical control. They also help track data, show trends, and spot variations that may affect the accuracy of an analysis.

One common tool is a quality control chart. This chart plots one or more analytical characteristics over time. The measured values are taken at different times during the analysis and compared with the known value of reference material. If a result falls outside the controlled limits, usually set by standard deviation from the reference value, the sample needs inspection. The analysis conditions may then be adjusted to keep the system under statistical control.

Proficiency testing is another quality control activity. It involves the same sample or analysis being run across multiple laboratories at the same time. The mean result from all labs, or a known standard reference value, is used to compare how much individual lab results vary. A Z score is then used to estimate how far each value is from the reference value.

Documentation and archiving are also critical in quality assurance. Every step related to quality control should be recorded, including sample custody, instrument calibration, standard operating procedures, and results. These records create a clear reference for later checks and must trace back to the person responsible. Signing and dating documents adds accountability. Good archives make past data easy to retrieve, review, and use for future decisions.
