Una soluzione contenente tutti i componenti dell'analisi, ad eccezione dell'analita, è nota come soluzione in bianco.
In condizioni identiche, la soluzione in bianco viene misurata con lo stesso strumento della soluzione standard e del campione di prova. Questa determinazione del bianco rivela eventuali errori sistematici ed errori causati dalle impurità nei reagenti e nei solventi.
Il valore del bianco viene sottratto da tutti i valori di misurazione successivi, ad esempio dalle soluzioni standard o dal campione di prova, per eliminare l'errore. Mentre i valori del bianco e della soluzione standard generano la curva di calibrazione, il valore ottenuto dal campione di prova viene utilizzato per determinare con precisione la concentrazione incognita dell'analita.
Nell'analisi titrimetrica, le soluzioni in bianco vengono utilizzate per eliminare gli errori causati dalle impurità nel titolante.

Lo scopo principale della preparazione del bianco analitico è di tenere conto di qualsiasi interferenza di fondo, o contaminazione, che potrebbe influire sull'accuratezza e sull'affidabilità del metodo analitico.

In alcuni casi sperimentali, i reagenti, i solventi o le apparecchiature di laboratorio utilizzati in un'analisi possono produrre un segnale rilevabile. Misurando il bianco analitico, questo segnale di fondo può essere determinato e sottratto dalle misurazioni delle soluzioni campione per garantire che il segnale osservato sia attribuito esclusivamente all'analita. L'ambiente di laboratorio può anche introdurre dei contaminanti come la polvere, le particelle sospese nell'aria o i residui di esperimenti precedenti. Blank solutions are used in analytical testing to show the background signal before a sample is measured. A blank solution does not contain the analyte, which is the substance of interest being tested or measured. It is usually made with the same reagents and procedure as the sample solution, but without the analyte.

The main purpose of a blank solution is to control for background interference and contamination. Reagents, solvents, or lab equipment can sometimes create a detectable signal on their own. By measuring the blank first, scientists can identify that background signal and subtract it from the sample result.

Blank solutions also help detect contamination from the lab environment. Dust, airborne particles, or residues from earlier experiments can affect the analysis. In some cases, a blank solution is also used to calibrate instruments or measurement systems. It establishes a baseline so later sample measurements can be standardized and more accurate.
