Il campionamento è il processo di selezione di una piccola porzione da un materiale sfuso per l'analisi. Un campione è questa porzione scelta che rappresenta il materiale sfuso o la popolazione.
Il materiale può essere di diversi tipi: solido, liquido o gassoso, la cui composizione può essere omogenea o eterogenea.
Per un materiale omogeneo, per l'analisi è sufficiente un singolo campione prelevato, denominato campione prelevato.
Tuttavia, per il materiale eterogeneo, vengono selezionati diversi campioni elementari dalle diverse parti del materiale sfuso e combinati per l'analisi. Questo è noto come campione lordo.
Un sottoinsieme omogeneo del campione lordo adatto per l'analisi di laboratorio è chiamato campione di laboratorio. Una parte del campione di laboratorio analizzato è denominata campione di analisi.
I diversi metodi di campionamento sono casuale, giudicante, sistematico, stratificato e a grappolo.

Nella chimica analitica, la scelta del metodo di campionamento è significativa perché influisce direttamente sulla qualità e sulla validità dei dati raccolti. I diversi metodi di campionamento possono introdurre vari gradi di distorsione ed errore, influenzando la validità dei risultati sperimentali. Per esempio, il campionamento casuale riduce al minimo la distorsione di selezione, mentre quello stratificato assicura che specifici sottogruppi vengano adeguatamente rappresentati, rendendo i dati più rappresentativi della popolazione.
