La manipolazione dei campioni comprende due aspetti critici per garantire risultati accurati: lo stoccaggio e il trasporto. 
Il trasporto si riferisce al processo di spostamento dei campioni in laboratorio senza alcuna modifica delle loro caratteristiche fisiche o chimiche. Durante il trasporto, a seconda della natura del campione, possono essere necessarie tecniche di conservazione come il congelamento e la conservazione chimica per evitare modifiche.
Ad esempio, il congelamento impedisce la degradazione termica dei campioni sensibili alla temperatura. L'aggiunta di conservanti chimici come agenti antibatterici ai campioni impedisce la crescita microbica.
In laboratorio, la corretta conservazione dei campioni è essenziale per prevenire la degradazione del campione. Ad esempio, i campioni termicamente labili vengono confezionati in contenitori sigillati, conservati in frigorifero o congelati.
I campioni liquidi sensibili alla luce devono essere conservati in ambienti bui o in bottiglie ambrate.
