Un transistor a giunzione bipolare ha quattro modalità di funzionamento, a seconda delle polarità di tensione alla giunzione emettitore-base e alla giunzione collettore-base.
In modalità attiva, la giunzione emettitore-base è polarizzata in avanti, consentendo l'iniezione di elettroni dall'emettitore alla base. La giunzione base-collettore è a polarizzazione inversa, bloccando il flusso dei portatori di maggioranza.
In questa modalità, il transistor funziona come un amplificatore, con una piccola corrente di base che controlla una corrente di collettore più grande.
Nella modalità di saturazione, entrambe le giunzioni sono polarizzate in avanti. Questa modalità corrisponde a una piccola tensione di polarizzazione e una grande corrente di uscita, agendo efficacemente come un interruttore chiuso.
La modalità di interruzione si verifica quando entrambe le giunzioni sono polarizzate inversamente, con conseguente assenza di flusso di corrente tra i terminali. Il transistor funge da interruttore aperto.
Nella modalità invertita, la giunzione emettitore-base è polarizzata inversamente, mentre la giunzione collettore-base è polarizzata in avanti. Viene spesso chiamata modalità attiva invertita, in cui il collettore diventa l'emettitore e viceversa.
Questa modalità ha un guadagno di corrente inferiore a causa della ridotta "efficienza dell'emettitore" causata da un minore drogaggio del collettore rispetto al drogaggio di base.

Un transistor a giunzione bipolare (BJT) è un componente versatile in elettronica, che funziona in quattro modalità distinte in base alla polarizzazione delle sue giunzioni: modalità attiva, saturazione, interruzione e invertita.


Modalità attiva: la modalità più comune per l'amplificazione, la modalità attiva, presenta una giunzione emettitore-base con polarizzazione diretta e una giunzione base-collettore con polarizzazione inversa. Questa configurazione consente di iniettare gli elettroni dall'emettitore alla base, bloccando i portatori maggioritari sul collettore. Il risultato è un’amplificazione significativa, con una piccola corrente di base che manipola una corrente di collettore considerevolmente più grande.


Modalità di saturazione: in questa modalità, le giunzioni emettitore-base e base-collettore, sono polarizzate direttamente. La modalità di saturazione è analoga a un interruttore chiuso, con polarizzazione di tensione minima e uscita di corrente massima. Questa modalità è tipica nelle operazioni di commutazione, in cui il transistor deve condurre una corrente elevata attraverso i suoi terminali.


Modalità di interruzione: in questo caso, entrambe le giunzioni sono polarizzate inversamente, arrestando di fatto qualsiasi flusso di corrente attraverso il transistor, in modo simile a un interruttore aperto. Questa modalità interrompe il flusso di corrente, che è fondamentale nei circuiti digitali per rappresentare uno stato "spento".


Modalità invertita: non comune nella maggior parte delle applicazioni, la modalità invertita prevede una giunzione emettitore-base, con polarizzazione inversa e una giunzione collettore-base con polarizzazione diretta. Questa disposizione inverte i ruoli del collettore e dell'emettitore. La modalità invertita è caratterizzata da un guadagno di corrente inferiore, principalmente a causa della minore efficienza del collettore, che funge da emettitore a causa dei suoi livelli di drogaggio inferiori rispetto alla base.


Ciascuna modalità operativa consente al BJT di eseguire varie funzioni nei circuiti elettronici, dall'amplificazione in modalità attiva, alle funzioni di commutazione in modalità saturazione e interruzione, evidenziando così l'adattabilità e l'importanza del componente nella progettazione e funzionalità elettronica.

A bipolar junction transistor (BJT) works in four modes that depend on how its two junctions are biased. Those modes are active, saturation, cut-off, and inverted. The biasing pattern controls whether the transistor amplifies current or acts like a switch.

Active mode is the most common mode for amplification. In this mode, the emitter-base junction is forward-biased and the base-collector junction is reverse-biased. Electrons move from the emitter into the base, while the collector blocks most majority carriers. A small base current can then control a much larger collector current.

Saturation mode happens when both the emitter-base and base-collector junctions are forward-biased. It works like a closed switch. The voltage bias is minimal, and the current output is maximal. This mode is often used in switching circuits when the transistor must conduct a high current.

Cut-off mode is the opposite case, with both junctions reverse-biased. Current flow through the transistor is effectively stopped, so it behaves like an open switch. In digital circuits, this state is important for representing an off condition.

Inverted mode is less common in normal use. In this mode, the emitter-base junction is reverse-biased and the collector-base junction is forward-biased. The roles of the collector and emitter are reversed. This mode has lower current gain because the collector is a less efficient emitter than the base due to its lower doping level.
