Si consideri un circuito di commutazione che comporta un cambiamento improvviso della tensione di base dell'emettitore.
Inizialmente, sia la giunzione base-emettitore che la giunzione collettore-emettitore sono polarizzate inversamente.
Qui, la corrente che scorre attraverso la base è zero e la corrente attraverso la giunzione collettore-emettitore è dovuta a portatori di minoranza. Questo è uno stato off del transistor.
Quando la giunzione dell'emettitore di base diventa polarizzata in avanti, la corrente di base aumenta, aumentando la corrente del collettore. Qui, il transistor si accende. Quindi, il transistor funziona come un interruttore ideale.
Il comportamento transitorio della corrente del collettore dipende dalla variazione della carica portante di minoranza in eccesso totale immagazzinata nella base.
Quando questa carica è inferiore a QS, la carica di base a tensione zero del collettore-base, il transistor funziona in modalità attiva.
Durante la fase di accensione, se la carica di base supera QS, il dispositivo entra in modalità di saturazione.
Durante la fase di spegnimento, la corrente del collettore rimane quasi costante fino a quando la carica immagazzinata non si riduce a QS.

Il comportamento di commutazione nei transistor a giunzione bipolare (BJT), è un aspetto fondamentale utilizzato in vari circuiti elettronici, in particolare per applicazioni logiche digitali come interruttori e amplificatori. In un tipico circuito di commutazione, un BJT alterna le modalità di interruzione e di saturazione, corrispondenti rispettivamente agli stati "off" e "on", comportandosi quindi come un interruttore ideale.


Modalità di interruzione (stato "Off"): in questo stato, sia le giunzioni emettitore-base che quelle collettore-base sono polarizzate inversamente. Il transistor impedisce il flusso di corrente attraverso i suoi terminali, rendendo effettivamente il dispositivo "spento". Questa modalità viene utilizzata quando non è richiesta la trasmissione del segnale, mantenendo uno stato di basso consumo nel circuito.


Modalità di saturazione (stato "On"): contrariamente alla modalità di interruzione, nello stato di saturazione, entrambe le giunzioni sono polarizzate in avanti. Questa configurazione consente il massimo flusso di corrente dal collettore all'emettitore. Il BJT in questa modalità si comporta come un interruttore chiuso, consentendo la trasmissione completa del segnale attraverso il circuito.


Dinamiche di commutazione: la transizione tra gli stati "off" e "on" viene attivata da un improvviso cambiamento nella tensione della base dell'emettitore, generalmente avviato da un impulso di corrente di ingresso positivo. Il comportamento della corrente del collettore durante queste transizioni, è cruciale per una commutazione efficace. Dipende dalla variazione della carica totale in eccesso del portatore minoritario, immagazzinato nella regione di base del transistor.


Durante la fase di accensione, se la carica base supera una certa soglia (indicata come QS), il BJT entra in modalità saturazione. Al contrario, durante la fase di spegnimento, la corrente del collettore rimane quasi costante finché la carica immagazzinata non si riduce nuovamente a QS, facendo sì che il transistor ritorni alla modalità attiva prima di diminuire infine verso zero quando si avvicina alla modalità di interruzione.


Comprendere queste transizioni e le dinamiche di carica associate, è essenziale per progettare BJT efficienti in grado di passare rapidamente da uno stato all'altro, con una perdita minima di prestazioni e potenza.

Bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) can work as digital on-off switches in electronic circuits. In this mode, the transistor moves between cut-off and saturation. These two states match the off and on positions of an ideal switch.

In cut-off mode, both the emitter-base junction and the collector-base junction are reverse-biased. This blocks current flow through the transistor and keeps it off. Circuits use this state when no signal transmission is needed, which helps maintain a low-power condition.

In saturation mode, both junctions are forward-biased. This allows maximum current to flow from the collector to the emitter. The BJT then behaves like a closed switch and lets the signal pass through the circuit.

The switch from off to on begins with a sudden change in emitter-base voltage. A positive input current pulse usually triggers this change. The collector current during switching depends on the total excess minority carrier charge stored in the base region.

During turn-on, the base charge can rise above a threshold called QS. When that happens, the BJT enters saturation. During turn-off, the collector current stays nearly constant until the stored charge falls back to QS. The transistor then returns to active mode and finally drops toward zero as it reaches cut-off.
