Un transistor a effetto di campo a giunzione viene utilizzato nei circuiti elettronici per controllare le correnti elettriche.
I JFET sono costituiti da una barra di silicio di tipo N o P contenente giunzioni PN sui lati e sono disponibili in due varianti principali: canale N e canale P.
Nella struttura cristallina di un JFET di tipo N, un sottile strato di materiale di tipo N si trova su un substrato di tipo P. Il gate è formato sulla parte superiore del canale N utilizzando materiale di tipo P. I fili conduttori sono fissati all'estremità del canale e del cancello.
In un JFET a canale N, una tensione di gate negativa respinge gli elettroni del canale, creando una regione di svuotamento e riducendo la conduttività del canale.
Al contrario, in un JFET a canale P, una tensione di gate positiva respinge le lacune del canale, con conseguente riduzione della conduttività del canale attraverso la polarizzazione inversa.
Controllando la tensione gate-source, è possibile regolare l'ampiezza della regione di svuotamento, gestendo efficacemente il flusso di corrente attraverso il canale.
La resistenza di drain AC, in genere di diverse centinaia di ohm, determina la quantità di corrente che scorre attraverso il canale. Altri parametri chiave di un JFET includono la transconduttanza e il fattore di amplificazione.

JFET gate-source bias controls current flow in a junction field effect transistor. A JFET uses one carrier type and comes in N-channel or P-channel forms. In both cases, the channel is surrounded by PN junctions, and those junctions help control how current moves through the device.

In an N-channel JFET, N-type material forms the channel on a P-type substrate. The gate is made of P-type material. Biasing this device means applying a negative voltage to the gate relative to the source. That negative voltage repels electrons in the channel and creates a depletion region, which narrows the channel and lowers its conductivity.

A P-channel JFET works in the opposite way. It has a P-type semiconductor channel with N-type gate material on either side. Applying a positive gate voltage to the P-type channel repels holes, increases the depletion region, and decreases conductivity. This reverse biasing is what helps control current through the device.

Proper JFET biasing is important when the device is used as a switch or an amplifier. The gate-source voltage adjusts the width of the depletion region and manages the current in the channel. Biasing also affects AC drain resistance, which is typically several hundred ohms, along with transconductance and amplification factor. Good biasing helps keep the JFET away from unwanted saturation or cutoff and supports stable circuit performance.
