La funzione di trasferimento è una rappresentazione matematica che descrive l'output del sistema per ogni possibile input nel dominio della frequenza.
Si consideri un'equazione differenziale generale di ordine n, lineare, invariante nel tempo. Questa equazione caratterizza il sistema in cui una variabile rappresenta l'input e un'altra rappresenta l'output.
Applicando la trasformata di Laplace a entrambi i lati di questa equazione si ottiene un'espressione algebrica.
Supponendo che tutte le condizioni iniziali siano zero, questa equazione viene ulteriormente semplificata.
Il rapporto tra la trasformata di Laplace dell'output e la trasformata di Laplace dell'input è chiamato funzione di trasferimento.
La funzione di trasferimento è rappresentata come un diagramma a blocchi, con l'input a sinistra, l'output a destra e la funzione di trasferimento del sistema all'interno del blocco.
Il denominatore della funzione di trasferimento è identico al polinomio caratteristico dell'equazione differenziale.
Si consideri un'equazione differenziale del primo ordine. La funzione di trasferimento per questa equazione è calcolata prendendo la trasformata di Laplace su entrambi i lati, assumendo condizioni iniziali pari a zero.
Dopo la semplificazione, il risultato è una funzione di trasferimento che rappresenta la risposta del sistema a un input nel dominio della frequenza.

La funzione di trasferimento è un concetto fondamentale nell'analisi e nella progettazione di sistemi lineari tempo-invarianti (LTI). Essa offre un modo conciso per comprendere come un sistema risponde ai diversi input nel dominio della frequenza. Funge anche da ponte tra le equazioni differenziali nel dominio del tempo che descrivono la dinamica del sistema e la rappresentazione nel dominio della frequenza che facilita una manipolazione e un'analisi più semplici.

Per derivare la funzione di trasferimento, consideriamo un'equazione differenziale lineare tempo-invariante generale di ordine n della forma:

The transfer function describes how a linear time-invariant, or LTI, system maps an input to an output in the frequency domain. It gives a compact way to study system behavior without working only in the time domain. It also connects the differential equations of the system to a form that is easier to handle mathematically.

For an nth-order LTI system, the behavior is written as a differential equation with constant coefficients. In that equation, r(t) is the input and c(t) is the output. The coefficients a_i and b_i remain fixed, which makes the system linear and time-invariant.

The transfer function is found by applying the Laplace transform to both sides of the differential equation. This step assumes zero initial conditions. The result is an algebraic equation in terms of s, the complex frequency variable.

After rearranging the terms, the transfer function H(s) is defined as C(s) divided by R(s), where C(s) is the output in the Laplace domain and R(s) is the input in the Laplace domain. This form shows that H(s) is a rational function of s. Its numerator comes from the input coefficients, and its denominator is the characteristic polynomial of the differential equation.

This representation shows how the output c(t) responds to an input r(t) in the frequency domain. It can also be drawn as a block diagram, with R(s) entering on the left, C(s) leaving on the right, and H(s) inside the block. That diagram makes system analysis easier, especially for more complex systems.
