Le reti elettriche sono inizialmente rappresentate da circuiti equivalenti costituiti da tre componenti lineari passivi: resistori, condensatori e induttori.
Questi componenti sono combinati in circuiti, con l'ingresso e l'uscita decisi, e la funzione di trasferimento è trovata utilizzando le leggi di Kirchhoff.
In un circuito RLC, la funzione di trasferimento che mette in relazione la tensione attraverso il condensatore con la tensione di ingresso può essere derivata utilizzando la legge della tensione di Kirchhoff.
Questo produce un'equazione integro-differenziale per la rete, assumendo zero condizioni iniziali.
Le variabili vengono inizialmente modificate da corrente a carica, quindi applicando la relazione tensione-carica per un condensatore.

Per derivare la funzione di trasferimento, consideriamo un circuito RLC con i componenti collegati in serie. La legge di Kirchhoff sulla tensione (KVL) afferma che la somma di tutte le tensioni attorno ad un circuito chiuso è 0. Per un circuito RLC, presupponendo condizioni iniziali pari a zero, questo si traduce nella seguente equazione integro-differenziale:

In questo caso, V(t) è la tensione di ingresso, VR(t)=i(t)R è la tensione attraverso il resistore, VC(t) = q(t)/C è la tensione attraverso il condensatore, dove q(t) è la carica sul condensatore e VL(t) = L(di(t)/dt) è la tensione attraverso l'induttore.

La corrente i(t) è correlata alla carica q(t) da i(t)=dq(t)/dt. Sostituendo queste relazioni nell'equazione KVL si ottiene:

Questa funzione di trasferimento rappresenta la tensione attraverso il condensatore in risposta alla tensione di ingresso nel dominio della frequenza. L'impedenza, analoga alla resistenza ma applicabile ai condensatori e agli induttori, svolge un ruolo chiave nella definizione della funzione di trasferimento. Inoltre, la legge di Kirchhoff sulle correnti (KCL) può anche essere usata per derivare le funzioni di trasferimento tramite un’analisi nodale. Questa legge afferma che la somma delle correnti che entrano in un nodo dev’essere uguale alla somma delle correnti che escono dal nodo. Nel circuito RLC, la corrente totale è la somma della corrente attraverso il condensatore e della corrente attraverso la combinazione in serie di un resistore e di un induttore. Applicando KCL e semplificando, si può ottenere la stessa funzione di trasferimento.

KVL e KCL sono degli strumenti potenti nell'analisi dei circuiti, consentono la derivazione di funzioni di trasferimento che descrivono in modo succinto il comportamento dinamico delle reti elettriche nel dominio della frequenza. RLC circuits use resistors, capacitors, and inductors to show how electrical signals change over time. In circuit analysis, these passive linear components are arranged so the link between an input and an output can be described with a transfer function. For this topic, the output is the voltage across the capacitor, compared with the input voltage.

A series RLC circuit can be analyzed with Kirchhoff's Voltage Law, or KVL. KVL says that the sum of all voltages around a closed loop is zero. Using that rule, the circuit can be written as an integro-differential equation when the initial conditions are zero.

In the equation, the input voltage is V(t). The resistor voltage is VR(t) = i(t)R, where i(t) is the current. The capacitor voltage depends on the charge q(t), and the inductor voltage depends on the current change in the loop. Since current and charge are related, these expressions can be substituted into the KVL equation.

The same circuit can also be written in voltage form and converted with the Laplace transform. With all initial conditions set to zero, this step gives an equation in the frequency domain. Rearranging the terms produces the transfer function for the capacitor voltage response.

Impedance plays an important role in this result. It works like resistance, but it applies to capacitors and inductors as well. The transfer function shows how the capacitor voltage responds to the input voltage in the frequency domain.

Kirchhoff's Current Law, or KCL, can also be used to reach the same result through nodal analysis. KCL says that the sum of currents entering a node must equal the sum of currents leaving it. In the RLC circuit, the total current is the current through the capacitor plus the current through the series resistor and inductor, and simplifying this relationship gives the same transfer function.
