Un sistema di controllo lineare invariante nel tempo è stabile se ritorna all'equilibrio dopo una condizione iniziale. È criticamente stabile se le oscillazioni della produzione continuano indefinitamente e instabile se la produzione diverge all'infinito dall'equilibrio.
A causa dell'accumulo di energia nei sistemi di controllo fisico, l'uscita non può seguire immediatamente l'ingresso, portando a una risposta transitoria prima di raggiungere uno stato stazionario.
Se l'output dello stato stazionario non corrisponde all'input, il sistema presenta un errore dello stato stazionario, che indica l'accuratezza del sistema.

Questi segnali di prova sono parte integrante della progettazione di sistemi di controllo per mostrare due aspetti chiave delle prestazioni: la risposta transitoria e la risposta in stato stazionario. La risposta transitoria descrive la transizione del sistema dal suo stato iniziale a quello finale, evidenziando la rapidità e la fluidità con cui avviene questa transizione. La risposta in stato stazionario indica il comportamento del sistema nel tempo una volta che si è stabilizzato dopo le perturbazioni iniziali.

La stabilità assoluta è un concetto cruciale nei sistemi di controllo, e determina se un sistema è stabile o instabile. La stabilità si ottiene quando un sistema mantiene l'equilibrio in assenza di disturbi o input. Nei sistemi di controllo lineari tempo-invarianti (LTI), la stabilità viene valutata in base alla risposta del sistema alle condizioni iniziali. Un sistema è stabile se torna all'equilibrio dopo un disturbo. Invece, è criticamente stabile se l'output oscilla indefinitamente senza crescere o diminuire, ed è instabile se l'output diverge all'infinito dall'equilibrio.

I sistemi di controllo fisico spesso coinvolgono elementi di accumulo di energia, come induttori e condensatori, che causano un ritardo nella risposta dell'output alle modifiche di input. Questo ritardo si manifesta come una risposta transitoria prima che il sistema raggiunga il suo stato stazionario. L'accuratezza di un sistema viene valutata dall'errore di stato stazionario, che è la differenza tra l'output di stato stazionario e l'input. Un sistema con un errore di stato stazionario significativo è meno accurato, questo indica la necessità di aggiustamenti nella progettazione del controllo.

Control system test signals help measure how a system reacts to change, stability, and accuracy. A ramp function is useful when a system changes gradually. A step function is used when a system faces a sudden disturbance. An impulse function is the best test signal for a shock input.

These signals are used to study two main performance features: transient response and steady-state response. Transient response is the short-term change from the initial state to the final state. It shows how fast and how smoothly the system settles. Steady-state response is the behavior after the system has settled from the initial disturbance.

Absolute stability is another key idea in control systems. A stable system stays in equilibrium when there are no disturbances or inputs. In linear time-invariant, or LTI, control systems, stability is judged by the response to initial conditions. A stable system returns to equilibrium after a disturbance, while a critically stable system keeps oscillating without growing or shrinking. An unstable system moves farther and farther from equilibrium.

Many physical control systems use energy storage elements such as inductors and capacitors. These elements can slow the output response to changes in input. That delay appears as a transient response before the system reaches steady state. System accuracy is often described by steady-state error, which is the difference between the steady-state output and the input. A large steady-state error means lower accuracy and shows that the control design may need adjustment.
