Si consideri una funzione di trasferimento a circuito chiuso. Per creare una tabella di Routh, le righe sono etichettate con potenze di s dal più alto.
La prima riga viene popolata orizzontalmente con ogni altro coefficiente del denominatore, a partire dalla potenza più alta. La seconda riga segue la successiva potenza più alta ed elenca i coefficienti saltati.
Le voci successive sono calcolate in base ai determinanti negativi delle righe precedenti, divisi per la voce immediatamente superiore della prima colonna.
Per un sistema, vengono calcolate le righe della tabella di Routh. La costante positiva ridimensiona le righe in modo indipendente.
Il criterio di Routh-Hurwitz afferma che il numero di radici del polinomio nel semipiano destro è uguale al numero di cambi di segno nella prima colonna della tabella di Routh, indicando un sistema instabile.
Un sistema è stabile se tutti i poli si trovano nella metà sinistra del piano s, il che equivale a nessun cambiamento di segno nella prima colonna della tabella di Routh.

dove σ è la parte reale e jω è la parte immaginaria. La prima riga è riempita orizzontalmente con ogni altro coefficiente del polinomio denominatore, a partire dalla potenza più alta. La seconda riga è quindi popolata con i coefficienti saltati dalla prima riga.

Le voci successive nella tabella Routh, vengono calcolate utilizzando i determinanti delle righe precedenti. In particolare, ogni voce viene determinata prendendo il determinante negativo delle due voci sovrastanti e dividendolo per la prima voce nella colonna direttamente sovrastante. Questo processo, continua finché l'intera tabella non viene riempita.

A titolo illustrativo, si consideri un sistema per cui vengono calcolate le righe della tabella di Routh. Se necessario, ogni riga viene ridimensionata indipendentemente da una costante positiva, per semplificare i calcoli. Secondo il criterio di Routh-Hurwitz, il numero di radici del polinomio nel piano s della metà destra, corrisponde al numero di cambiamenti di segno nella prima colonna della tabella di Routh. Questi cambiamenti di segno indicano instabilità.

Al contrario, un sistema è stabile se tutti i poli sono nel piano s della metà sinistra, ovvero non ci sono cambiamenti di segno nella prima colonna della tabella di Routh. Assicurare che non si verifichino cambiamenti di segno, conferma che il sistema rimarrà stabile in varie condizioni operative.

Comprendere e applicare il criterio di Routh-Hurwitz, è fondamentale per mantenere la stabilità di sistemi complessi come le reti elettriche. Verificando che tutti i poli siano posizionati nel piano s della metà sinistra, gli ingegneri possono garantire che il sistema funzioni in modo affidabile, prevenendo problemi come blackout e garantendo un'alimentazione continua. Questo metodo fornisce un approccio sistematico all'analisi della stabilità, identificando e mitigando la potenziale instabilità nel sistema.

Checking stability with the Routh table is a useful part of analyzing a closed-loop transfer function. It helps determine whether a system will remain stable when load conditions change or when a fault occurs. In a power grid, this kind of check is important because instability can lead to blackouts.

The Routh-Hurwitz criterion uses a table built from the denominator polynomial of the transfer function. The rows of the Routh table are labeled by powers of the complex variable s, starting with the highest power. Here, s is a complex number with a real part, σ, and an imaginary part, jω.

The first row is filled with every other coefficient from the denominator polynomial. It starts with the coefficient from the highest power term. The second row then uses the coefficients that were skipped in the first row.

The remaining entries are found from the rows above them. Each new value is calculated from the negative determinant of the two entries above it, divided by the first entry in the column directly above. If needed, each row can be scaled by a positive constant to make the calculations simpler.

Once the table is complete, the first column gives the stability result. The number of sign changes in that column matches the number of roots in the right-half s-plane. Sign changes show instability. If there are no sign changes, then all poles are in the left-half s-plane and the system is stable. This makes the Routh-Hurwitz criterion a systematic way to test whether a system can operate reliably under different conditions.
