La tensione e la corrente vengono misurate dall'estremità ricevente, con impedenza in serie e ammettenza shunt definite per unità di lunghezza.
Usando le leggi di Kirchhoff e prendendo i limiti delta x si avvicina a zero, si derivano due equazioni differenziali lineari. Differenziando la tensione e sostituendola nell'equazione della corrente si ottiene un'equazione omogenea del secondo ordine.
La soluzione prevede due costanti di integrazione e una costante di propagazione. Sostituendo questo nell'equazione della tensione e riorganizzando il denominatore si ottiene l'espressione di corrente con l'impedenza caratteristica.
Dopo aver valutato le costanti di integrazione dalle condizioni al contorno e identificato le funzioni iperboliche, si ottengono i parametri ABCD della retta distribuita. Questi forniscono la corrente e la tensione in qualsiasi punto rispetto ai valori dell'estremità di ricezione.
Anche i parametri ABCD vengono valutati alla fine dell'invio. La costante di propagazione, una quantità complessa, è adimensionale quando moltiplicata per la lunghezza e aiuta a determinare le funzioni iperboliche.
Questi parametri si applicano a qualsiasi lunghezza di linea. L'approssimazione può essere utilizzata per calcoli manuali che coinvolgono linee di corta e media lunghezza.

Applicando la legge di Kirchhoff sulla tensione (KVL) e la legge di Kirchhoff sulla corrente (KCL) a questa configurazione, si derivano le relazioni per le variazioni di tensione e corrente lungo la linea.

Transmission lines carry electric power, and their resistance, inductance, and capacitance are spread out along the line. Because these properties are distributed per unit length, voltage and current change as they move from one end of the line to the other. Differential equations are used to describe that variation.

A line-section model helps show how this works. In the model, a small length, Δx, is used to represent the line. Voltage V(x) and current i(x) are measured from the receiving end. The line also includes a series impedance, z = R + jωL, and a shunt admittance, y = G + jωC, per unit length.

Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law and Kirchhoff’s Current Law are applied to the small line section. As Δx becomes very small, the results turn into linear, first-order, homogeneous differential equations. These equations describe how voltage and current change along the transmission line.

Solving the equations gives the propagation constant, γ. This complex value combines the effects of series impedance and shunt admittance. Its real part shows attenuation, and its imaginary part shows phase shift. The product of γ and the line length is dimensionless and is used in the hyperbolic functions that describe the line behavior.

The general solutions for voltage and current include two integration constants. These constants are found from boundary conditions at the receiving end. The solutions also define the characteristic impedance, Zc, which reflects the intrinsic impedance of the transmission line. Voltage and current can then be written with cosh and sinh functions.

From these hyperbolic expressions, the ABCD parameters, also called transmission line constants, are obtained. They give a matrix form that relates the voltage and current at any point on the line to the values at the receiving end. The exact ABCD parameters work for any line length, while short- and medium-length lines may use approximations for hand calculations.
