Il problema del flusso di potenza calcola l'entità della tensione, l'angolo di fase e i flussi di potenza reale e reattiva in un sistema di alimentazione stazionario trifase bilanciato. Si consideri il suo diagramma unifilare che fornisce tre dati di input. Ogni bus ha quattro variabili: due sono dati di input e due sono calcolati.
La potenza erogata al bus è suddivisa in termini di generatore e carico. Gli autobus si dividono in tre tipi. Per ogni tipo, alcune variabili sono fornite come input, mentre altre sono calcolate da un programma di flusso di potenza.
Le linee di trasmissione sono rappresentate da circuiti pi equivalenti. I dati di ingresso includono l'impedenza in serie, l'ammettenza shunt, i bus collegati e il valore nominale massimo in mega-volt-ampere.
Questi dati costruiscono la matrice di ammettenza del bus, portando alla costruzione di equazioni nodali per la rete e alla determinazione della potenza complessa erogata a ciascun bus.
Le soluzioni per il flusso di potenza di Gauss-Seidel utilizzano queste equazioni nodali per calcolare la complessa potenza erogata. Prendendo parti reali e immaginarie dell'equazione derivata, si formano equazioni di bilancio di potenza per ogni bus.
Le soluzioni per il flusso di potenza di Newton-Raphson utilizzano queste equazioni di flusso di potenza non lineari, offrendo maggiore precisione e una convergenza più rapida.

L'analisi del problema del flusso di potenza è fondamentale per determinare i flussi di potenza reale e reattiva nei componenti di rete, come linee di trasmissione, trasformatori e carichi. Lo schema monofilare del sistema di alimentazione fornisce dati sulle barre, sulla linea di trasmissione e sul trasformatore. Ogni barra k nel sistema è caratterizzata da quattro variabili chiave: ampiezza della tensione V_k​, angolo di fase δ_k​, potenza reale P_k e potenza reattiva Q_k. Due di queste quattro variabili sono input, mentre il programma del flusso di potenza calcola le rimanenti. La potenza erogata alla barra k può essere espressa in termini di componenti del generatore e del carico:

In base alle loro caratteristiche operative, le barre all'interno del sistema di alimentazione sono classificate in tre tipi: barra di riferimento, barra di carico (PQ) e barra controllata in tensione. La barra di riferimento ha una magnitudine di tensione vicina a 1,0 per unità e un angolo di fase di zero gradi. Nella barra di carico (PQ), vengono specificate la potenza reale e reattiva, mentre la magnitudine di tensione e l'angolo di fase sono sconosciuti. Per una barra controllata in tensione, vengono forniti la potenza reale e la magnitudine di tensione.

Le equazioni correnti per una rete sono espresse in termini di matrici di ammettenza:

I due principali metodi iterativi per risolvere il problema del flusso di potenza sono Gauss-Seidel e Newton-Raphson. Il metodo Gauss-Seidel risolve iterativamente le equazioni nodali, ricalcolando la corrente per le barre di carico utilizzando valori di potenza noti e regolando la potenza reattiva per le barre controllate dalla tensione fino alla convergenza. Il metodo Newton-Raphson linearizza le equazioni del flusso di potenza e utilizza la matrice Jacobiana per le correzioni della tensione, generalmente convergendo più velocemente e in modo più adatto per sistemi di grandi dimensioni. Questi metodi iterativi sono fondamentali per garantire che il sistema di alimentazione funzioni entro i suoi parametri specificati, mantenendo stabilità ed efficienza in tutta la rete.

Power flow analysis helps determine how real and reactive power move through an electric network. It uses the system’s single-line diagram, which shows the buses, transmission lines, transformers, and loads. The analysis focuses on balanced three-phase steady-state operation.

Each bus in the system has four key variables: voltage magnitude V k, phase angle δ k, real power P k, and reactive power Q k. Two of these four variables are treated as inputs. The power flow program solves for the remaining values.

Buses are grouped by operating role. A swing bus usually has a voltage magnitude close to 1.0 per unit and a phase angle of zero degrees. A load or PQ bus has specified real and reactive power, while its voltage magnitude and phase angle are unknown. A voltage-controlled bus has given real power and voltage magnitude.

The network equations are written with an admittance matrix, where I is the vector of injected source currents and V is the vector of bus voltages. For each bus k, current and complex power are related through these equations. The power flow problem is then solved with iterative methods.

Two main methods are used: Gauss-Seidel and Newton-Raphson. Gauss-Seidel repeatedly solves the nodal equations, updates current for load buses from known power values, and adjusts reactive power for voltage-controlled buses until the results converge. Newton-Raphson linearizes the power flow equations and uses the Jacobian matrix to correct voltages, so it usually converges faster and is better for large systems. These methods help keep the power system within its specified limits and support stable, efficient network operation.
