Sia i mattoni da rivestimento che quelli da costruzione sono definiti come unità solide; questi possono essere veramente solidi, con anima o con fette. La superficie del mattone, resistendo al carico, dovrebbe essere solida almeno al 75 percento.
I mattoni forati possono avere fino al 60% del loro volume vuoto e sono più leggeri dei mattoni pieni.

Brick Classifications

Bricks used in construction are grouped by where they are used and by their structure. The main types include facing bricks, building bricks, hollow bricks, paving bricks, and firebricks. These categories show how one material can serve different jobs in a structure.

Facing bricks, also called face bricks, are used where both strength and appearance matter. They form the visible surface of a wall, so their look is important. Building bricks are usually placed in hidden parts of a structure, such as behind the facing bricks in a masonry wall.

Facing bricks and building bricks are both considered solid bricks. They may be fully solid, cored, or have indentations called frogs. For a load-bearing surface, at least 75 percent must be solid.

Hollow bricks contain void space that can make up as much as 60 percent of their volume. This makes them lighter than solid bricks. The empty spaces also allow reinforcement bars to be inserted and grouted, which helps strengthen reinforced brick masonry.

Paving bricks are made to handle abrasive wear and freeze-thaw cycles. They are designed to stay durable even if water gets into them. Firebricks are used in high-temperature places, such as fireplace linings, and they are set with thin layers of fireclay mortar so they can withstand extreme heat.
