La muratura in pietra si divide principalmente in due categorie: macerie e bugnati.
La muratura in macerie utilizza pietre irregolari e di forma naturale, spesso trovate come rocce di fiume o frammenti di cava.
La muratura bugnata utilizza blocchi di forma quadrata o rettangolare, consentendo superfici più lisce.
Sia le murature in macerie che quelle bugnate possono essere rivestite, con giunti orizzontali coerenti, o non rivestite, dove tali linee di giunzione orizzontali sono assenti, offrendo un'estetica strutturale diversa.
Nella lavorazione delle macerie, le forme e le dimensioni irregolari delle pietre richiedono che il muratore scelga ogni pietra per adattarla allo spazio assegnato. Occasionalmente, una pietra può essere modellata usando un martello da muratore per ottenere un adattamento preciso.
I giunti di malta nella muratura in pietra sono spesso rastrellati, tra mezzo pollice e un pollice o più, dopo che le pietre sono state impostate per evitare assestamenti irregolari.
Una volta che la malta rimanente è indurita spruzzando acqua e lasciandola asciugare, la parete viene rifinita puntando con cura per riempire completamente le fughe con la malta.

La muratura in conci, d'altra parte, utilizza pietre tagliate uniformemente, quadrate o rettangolari, creando superfici più lisce e un aspetto strutturale più raffinato.

Sia la muratura in pietrisco che quella in conci possono essere costruite in stili “a corsi” o “non a corsi”. La muratura “a corsi” presenta giunti orizzontali uniformi in tutta la costruzione, migliorando l'uniformità strutturale e la regolarità visiva. La muratura “non a corsi” è priva di questi giunti orizzontali uniformi, conferendo alla struttura un'estetica più casuale e naturale.

Una volta che le pietre sono state sistemate, i giunti di malta vengono in genere rastrellati a una profondità di circa 1,27 o 2,54 centimetri per evitare cedimenti irregolari delle pietre. Dopo la stagionatura, i giunti vengono stuccati con malta per garantire che siano completamente riempiti.

Nell’edilizia moderna, la muratura in pietra è spesso combinata con la muratura in calcestruzzo per risparmiare, specialmente nelle parti della struttura non visibili dove l'aspetto estetico della pietra è meno importante.

Stone masonry is a building method that uses individual stones to form structures. It is usually divided into two main categories: rubble masonry and ashlar masonry.

Rubble masonry uses uneven, naturally shaped stones. These may be river rocks or fragments from quarries. A mason often has to choose each stone carefully and may shape it to fit the space, even when the stones differ in size and form.

Ashlar masonry uses stones that are cut into square or rectangular shapes. This type creates smoother surfaces and a more refined look. Both rubble and ashlar masonry can be built in coursed or uncoursed styles.

Coursed masonry has regular horizontal joints across the structure. This gives the work a more uniform and orderly appearance. Uncoursed masonry does not have these continuous horizontal joints, so it looks more random and natural.

After the stones are placed, the mortar joints are usually raked to a depth of about half an inch to an inch. This helps prevent irregular settling of the stones. After the mortar cures, the joints are pointed to make sure they are fully filled.

In modern construction, stone masonry is often combined with concrete masonry to reduce cost. This is especially common in parts of a structure that are not visible. In those areas, the visual appeal of stone matters less.
