Quando si considera la resistenza alla trazione del calcestruzzo, anche scontando variabili come l'aggregato per ridurre l'eterogeneità, la resistenza alla trazione misurata è mille volte inferiore alla resistenza teorica.
La teoria di Griffith spiega questo divario tra la resistenza alla trazione misurata e quella teorica con la presenza di crepe microscopiche.
Queste cricche amplificano le sollecitazioni sulle punte delle cricche quando viene applicato un carico, portando alla rottura del materiale con carichi inferiori al previsto.
Le dimensioni e possibilmente la forma di un provino di calcestruzzo contribuiscono alla sua resistenza e una dimensione maggiore ha maggiori probabilità di avere numerose crepe critiche che potrebbero portare a cedimenti.
Il calcestruzzo può resistere a sollecitazioni se sottoposto a un carico esterno fino a raggiungere un punto critico, in cui mostra un cedimento fragile, fratturandosi improvvisamente senza una significativa deformazione precedente.
Le cricche interne influenzano la probabilità e la posizione del cedimento; le concentrazioni di sollecitazione più elevate si verificano sulla punta della cricca e dipendono dall'orientamento della cricca rispetto al carico applicato.
I percorsi di rottura nel calcestruzzo si verificano tipicamente lungo le interfacce tra la pasta cementizia e gli aggregati di grandi dimensioni e talvolta anche tagliano direttamente gli aggregati.

 Anche le dimensioni e la forma di un campione di calcestruzzo svolgono un ruolo critico nella sua resistenza complessiva. I campioni più grandi sono più suscettibili al cedimento perché hanno maggiori probabilità di contenere numerose crepe critiche. Queste crepe interne non solo determinano la probabilità di cedimento, ma influenzano anche dove è più probabile che si verifichi il cedimento. Le concentrazioni di stress più elevate si trovano sulle punte di queste crepe, con il loro impatto ulteriormente influenzato dal modo in cui le crepe sono orientate rispetto alla direzione del carico applicato.


 Per quanto riguarda i percorsi di rottura, questi si manifestano tipicamente lungo le interfacce tra la pasta di cemento e gli aggregati più grandi all'interno della miscela di calcestruzzo. In alcuni casi, questi percorsi possono tagliare gli aggregati stessi. Comprendere queste dinamiche è fondamentale per migliorare la progettazione e la formulazione del calcestruzzo al fine di migliorarne l'integrità strutturale e la durata sotto sforzo di trazione.
