Il rapporto aggregato-cemento è il peso dell'aggregato totale rispetto a quello del cemento in una miscela di calcestruzzo.
Un rapporto aggregato-cemento più elevato si traduce in una miscela di calcestruzzo con meno cemento, con conseguente riduzione della lavorabilità.
Al contrario, una miscela di calcestruzzo con un rapporto aggregato-cemento più basso, nota come miscela ricca, contiene più pasta cementizia, ottenendo una migliore lavorabilità perché la pasta cementizia facilita il movimento regolare delle particelle di aggregato.
Un rapporto aggregato-cemento più elevato mostra tipicamente una maggiore resistenza quando il rapporto acqua-cemento è costante.
Riducendo il rapporto aggregato-cemento con un rapporto acqua-cemento costante si aumenta il contenuto d'acqua, migliorando così la consistenza. Se il contenuto d'acqua è fisso ma il rapporto aggregato-cemento è ridotto, il rapporto acqua-cemento diminuisce senza influire sulla consistenza.
Con una percentuale minore del volume di calcestruzzo assorbito dalla pasta cementizia, come si vede nelle miscele più magre, la porosità totale del calcestruzzo diminuisce, con conseguente aumento della resistenza, che esclude i vuoti all'interno degli aggregati stessi.
I vuoti all'interno degli aggregati normali sono generalmente insignificanti e non influiscono in modo sostanziale sulla resistenza del calcestruzzo.
