La resistenza alla trazione cresce più lentamente della resistenza alla compressione ed è influenzata da diversi fattori, tra cui i metodi di prova, le dimensioni del campione, la struttura dell'aggregato e il contenuto di umidità del calcestruzzo.
I test di tensione diretta sono impegnativi a causa di problemi con la presa del provino e l'evitare carichi eccentrici, il che li rende rari. Invece, le prove di flessione e le prove di trazione a spacco verificano le prestazioni sotto tensione indiretta.
Le dimensioni maggiori dei campioni di laboratorio per la tensione diretta significano che all'aumentare del volume, aumenta anche la probabilità di incontrare un punto debole, portando potenzialmente al fallimento.
L'aggregato frantumato angolare migliora la resistenza alla flessione rispetto alla ghiaia arrotondata grazie a un migliore incollaggio. La forma dell'aggregato ha scarso effetto sulla spaccatura del calcestruzzo e sulla resistenza alla trazione diretta.

L'umidità del calcestruzzo influisce sulla resistenza del calcestruzzo; comparativamente, il calcestruzzo indurito a umido e immagazzinato a secco ha una resistenza alla compressione più elevata rispetto al calcestruzzo immagazzinato continuamente a umido.
Sebbene anche la relazione tra la sua resistenza alla flessione e alla compressione sia influenzata, la resistenza alla spaccatura e alla trazione diretta rimane costante.

Concrete strength testing compares tensile strength and compressive strength. These two properties are related, but they do not rise at the same rate. Tensile strength usually grows more slowly than compressive strength, so the balance between them changes as concrete gets stronger.

Several factors affect tensile strength measurements. The test method, specimen size and shape, aggregate texture, and moisture content can all change the result. Direct tension tests are difficult to perform because gripping the sample can create eccentric loads, which makes the test less reliable.

For that reason, indirect tests are often used instead. Flexure tests measure how a concrete sample bends, and splitting tests measure how it breaks under pressure. These methods give useful information about tensile behavior when direct tension testing is hard to carry out.

Aggregate type has little effect on direct tensile strength and splitting tensile strength. However, angular crushed aggregate can produce greater flexural strength than rounded gravel because it bonds better. Even so, crushed aggregate is less effective in tension. Compressive strength is mostly unaffected by aggregate shape or texture.

The ratio of flexural strength to compressive strength becomes more noticeable when angular crushed aggregate is used, especially at higher compressive strengths. Curing and storage also matter. Moisture levels during these stages can strongly affect both compressive and tensile strength, so careful control of storage conditions is important in concrete testing and use.
