Il calcestruzzo fibrorinforzato è costituito da cemento idraulico con aggregati fini o grossolani, che incorporano fibre separate e non continue.
Queste fibre possono essere naturali, come l'amianto, o prodotte in vetro, acciaio o polimeri, come il polipropilene.
Le fibre di acciaio sono utilizzate prevalentemente per migliorare le proprietà strutturali e non strutturali del calcestruzzo. Le lunghezze delle fibre vanno da tre quarti a due pollici e mezzo.
La proporzione del volume delle fibre classifica il calcestruzzo fibrorinforzato. Meno dell'uno percento di fibre aiuta a evitare crepe da ritiro nel calcestruzzo.
Le fibre tra l'uno e il due percento aumentano il modulo di rottura, la tenacità e la resistenza agli urti, mentre oltre il due percento causa l'incrudimento dovuto alla deformazione plastica.
Il calcestruzzo semplice si rompe al raggiungimento della massima resistenza alla flessione, mentre il calcestruzzo fibrorinforzato mostra una portanza continua e una maggiore duttilità e prestazioni post-fessurazione.
Le caratteristiche delle fibre nel calcestruzzo includono le proporzioni, la forma, la consistenza e la struttura. Lo stress massimo che una fibra può sopportare è correlato al suo rapporto d'aspetto, il rapporto lunghezza-diametro.

Fiber Reinforced Concrete

Il calcestruzzo rinforzato con fibre migliora significativamente le proprietà strutturali e non strutturali del calcestruzzo tradizionale incorporando fibre come acciaio, vetro e polimeri. Le tecniche di miscelazione e movimentazione del calcestruzzo rinforzato con fibre vengono adattate in base al tipo di fibre utilizzate. Il rapporto di aspetto, la forma, la consistenza e la struttura delle fibre svolgono un ruolo fondamentale nel definire le prestazioni complessive del calcestruzzo, rendendo il calcestruzzo rinforzato con fibre la scelta preferita per progetti di costruzione che richiedono maggiore durata e resistenza. Proprietà come il modulo di elasticità, il coefficiente di Poisson e la capacità di evitare grandi sollecitazioni laterali sono considerazioni importanti. Gli usi comuni includono pannelli decorativi prefabbricati, lastre ignifughe e rivestimenti in calcestruzzo, con l'utilizzo del materiale che si estende sia alle strutture permanenti che alle casseforme temporanee.

Fiber-reinforced concrete is concrete that includes added fibers to improve strength and durability. It uses hydraulic cement with fine or coarse aggregates, plus separated, non-continuous fibers mixed through the material. These fibers can come from steel, glass, and polymers, as well as natural sources such as sisal and cellulose or manufactured sources such as polypropylene and Kevlar.

Steel fibers are often preferred because they are strong and tough. They help concrete resist cracking and improve ductility, which means the material can bend or stretch more before failing.
