La produzione dell'acciaio inizia con la fusione del minerale di ferro in ghisa nell'altoforno. La fusione comporta la stratificazione del minerale di ferro con un combustibile chiamato coke e calcare frantumato nella fornace.
In primo luogo, il coke viene acceso con un getto d'aria, producendo monossido di carbonio, che riduce il minerale a ferro fuso.
Il calcare forma una scoria, catturando le impurità, e galleggia sopra il metallo fuso. Questo ferro fuso viene poi drenato per la lavorazione dell'acciaio.
Il ferro fuso contiene carbonio in eccesso e impurità. Per rimuoverli viene adottato un processo basico di ossigeno. Si tratta di una lancia di ossigeno immersa nel ferro fuso e nei rottami, utilizzando un fondente di calce e fluorite, che forma scorie scartabili reagendo con il fosforo.
Infine, possono essere introdotti nuovi elementi metallici per modificare la composizione dell'acciaio secondo necessità.
Quando l'acciaio raggiunge la fase di colata dal forno, viene modellato in lingotti o lavorato tramite una macchina per la colata a trefoli. Le lingottiere possono avere diametri che si estendono su diversi piedi e altezze che vanno da sei a otto piedi.
Inoltre, l'acciaio finito viene continuamente colato in forme spesse e ruvide note come travi grezze o blumi.

La produzione di acciaio è un processo in più fasi che inizia con la fusione in un altoforno del minerale di ferro in ghisa. Questa fase iniziale prevede la stratificazione del minerale di ferro con coke, un tipo di combustibile, e calcare frantumato all'interno del forno. Il coke viene acceso con un elevato volume di aria, portando alla creazione di monossido di carbonio, che agisce per ridurre il minerale di ferro in ferro puro.

Durante questo processo di fusione, il calcare svolge un ruolo cruciale formando delle scorie. Le scorie catturano le impurità all'interno del ferro fuso, come silice, fosforo e allumina, e galleggiano sopra il metallo fuso, consentendo una facile separazione. Il ferro fuso purificato viene quindi drenato e spostato alla fase successiva per la lavorazione dell'acciaio.

Tuttavia, questo ferro fuso contiene in genere carbonio in eccesso e altre impurità che devono essere rimosse per creare acciaio di qualità. Ciò avviene tramite il processo di ossigeno basico, in cui una lancia raffreddata ad acqua viene immersa in una miscela di ferro fuso e rottami metallici. L'aggiunta di calce e flusso di fluorite aiuta a formare scorie reagendo con il fosforo, che viene poi scartato.

Dopo la raffinazione, la composizione dell'acciaio può essere ulteriormente modificata introducendo nuovi elementi metallici per soddisfare requisiti specifici. L'acciaio è quindi pronto per essere modellato; viene versato in stampi per formare lingotti o lavorato tramite una macchina per la fusione a filo. Gli stampi per lingotti sono grandi, con diametri e altezze che possono estendersi anche oltre al metro di lunghezza.

La fase finale nella produzione dell'acciaio prevede la fusione continua dell'acciaio raffinato in forme spesse e grezze note come travi grezze o blumi, che sono poi pronte per un'ulteriore lavorazione in vari prodotti in acciaio.

Steel manufacturing turns iron ore into steel through several controlled stages. It starts in a blast furnace, where iron ore is layered with coke and crushed limestone. The coke is a fuel, and the limestone helps remove unwanted material from the molten metal.

Air is blasted into the furnace, and the coke ignites. This produces carbon monoxide, which reduces the iron ore to pure iron. As the iron melts, limestone forms slag. Slag traps impurities such as silica, phosphorus, and alumina. The slag floats on top of the molten iron, so it can be separated easily.

The purified molten iron is drained and sent to the next stage. It still contains too much carbon and other impurities for high-quality steel. These are removed in the basic oxygen process. In this step, a water-cooled lance is lowered into a mix of molten iron and scrap metal. Lime and fluorspar flux are added to help form slag and react with phosphorus. The slag is then discarded.

After refining, the steel can be adjusted for different needs by adding new metallic elements. The finished steel is then shaped for further use. It may be poured into large ingot molds or sent through a strand-casting machine. The final products from continuous casting are thick, rough forms called beam blanks or blooms, which are ready for more processing into steel products.
