Le caratteristiche meccaniche dell'acciaio, come la resistenza alla trazione, sono determinate da una prova di trazione in cui un provino viene tirato in un dispositivo di presa.
Le letture del test di trazione vengono utilizzate per tracciare una curva sforzo-deformazione che rappresenta le caratteristiche salienti del provino come il limite proporzionale, il punto di snervamento, la resistenza finale e la rottura.
La prova di torsione applica una coppia esterna a un provino cilindrico per torcerlo uniformemente e misurare il modulo di taglio.
La prova d'urto Charpy con intaglio a V viene comunemente condotta per misurare la tenacità dell'acciaio utilizzando un provino dentato colpito da un braccio oscillante. L'energia assorbita nella fratturazione è calcolata dalla differenza di altezza prima e dopo l'impatto.
Viene eseguito un test di flessione per trovare la capacità dell'acciaio di resistere alla flessione. Si tratta di piegare un campione di acciaio a un certo angolo e attorno a un raggio predeterminato.
La presenza e l'entità della fessurazione sul lato teso della curva ne determinano il cedimento dovuto alla flessione.
La durezza dell'acciaio è comunemente determinata dal test di durezza Rockwell, che misura la quantità di penetrazione di un cono di diamante o di una sfera d'acciaio nel campione in condizioni specifiche.

Steel is tested for strength, toughness, and flexibility using several standard mechanical tests. These tests help show how steel will behave in real use. They also help engineers choose steel for the right job.

A tension test measures tensile strength. In this test, a steel specimen is pulled in a gripping device until it breaks. The results are used to draw a stress-strain curve. That curve shows the proportional limit, yield point, ultimate strength, and the point of rupture.

A torsion test measures how steel responds to twisting force. A cylindrical specimen is given torque, which is a turning force. The test shows how much the steel twists and helps calculate the shear modulus. This information explains steel behavior under twisting loads.

Steel toughness is checked with the Charpy V-notch test. In this impact test, a notched specimen is struck by a swinging arm. The energy absorbed during fracture is found from the difference in the arm height before and after impact. A bending test is also used to see how well steel resists bending. The sample is bent to a set angle and around a fixed radius, and cracking on the tension side shows whether it fails.

Hardness is measured with the Rockwell hardness test. This test uses a diamond cone or steel ball pressed into the steel under a fixed load. The depth of penetration shows how hard the steel is.
