I microrganismi sono essenziali per il riciclaggio di elementi chiave come carbonio, azoto e fosforo.Nel ciclo del carbonio, i microbi decompongono la materia organica e rilasciano anidride carbonica in modo aerobico. Gli organismi fotosintetici utilizzano quindi questa anidride carbonica per produrre composti organici.I batteri che fissano l'azoto, come il rizobio, formano relazioni simbiotiche con i legumi, convertendo l'azoto atmosferico in ammoniaca per arricchire il suolo.I microbi, come Pseudomonas, restituiscono azoto all'atmosfera attraverso la denitrificazione.Alcune specie di Bacillus, come il Bacillus subtilis, solubilizzano i fosfati secernendo acidi organici, aumentando la fertilità del suolo.I microbi svolgono anche un ruolo fondamentale nel trattamento delle acque reflue abbattendo gli inquinanti organici durante il trattamento secondario, riducendo significativamente la domanda biologica di ossigeno delle acque reflue.Nel biorisanamento, microbi come Pseudomonas putida e Aspergillus niger degradano rispettivamente gli idrocarburi e bioaccumulano metalli pesanti, trasformando le tossine in forme più sicure.Inoltre, i microbi supportano la produzione di biocarburanti: il lievito fermenta gli zuccheri in etanolo, mentre i batteri anaerobici generano biogas, composto principalmente da metano.

Microrganismi nei cicli degli elementi
Nel ciclo del carbonio, i microrganismi decompongono la materia organica, rilasciando anidride carbonica tramite la respirazione aerobica. Questa anidride carbonica viene successivamente utilizzata dagli organismi fotosintetici per sintetizzare i composti organici, chiudendo il ciclo del carbonio.

In questa fase, i microrganismi degradano gli inquinanti organici, riducendo significativamente la domanda biochimica di ossigeno (BOD) delle acque reflue. Questo passaggio minimizza l&#8217;impatto ambientale dello scarico delle acque reflue, assicurando sistemi idrici pi&#249; puliti.
Biorisanamento e controllo dell&#8217;inquinamento
I microrganismi sono indispensabili nel biorisanamento, un processo che sfrutta le loro capacit&#224; metaboliche per degradare sostanze nocive. Microorganisms help keep ecosystems balanced by recycling carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. They also support sewage treatment, bioremediation, and biofuel production. These roles make microbes important in both natural and human-made systems.

In the carbon cycle, microorganisms break down dead organic matter. During aerobic respiration, they release carbon dioxide. Photosynthetic organisms then use that carbon dioxide to make organic compounds, which helps close the carbon loop.

Microbes are also essential in the nitrogen cycle. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria such as Rhizobium live with legumes and convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia. That ammonia becomes ammonium ions for plant uptake. Denitrifying bacteria such as Pseudomonas return nitrogen to the atmosphere by reducing nitrates to nitrogen gas.

Some bacteria also help make phosphorus easier for plants to use. Pseudomonas fluorescens can solubilize insoluble phosphate minerals by releasing organic acids. This increases soil phosphorus availability and improves fertility.

Microorganisms play a major role in secondary sewage treatment. They break down organic pollutants in wastewater and lower biological oxygen demand, or BOD. This helps reduce the environmental impact of wastewater before it is discharged.

Microbes are also used in bioremediation, which is the cleanup of polluted sites using living organisms. Pseudomonas putida can degrade hydrocarbons, and fungi such as Aspergillus niger can remove heavy metals through biosorption. These processes help clean oil spills, industrial waste, and other toxic materials.

Microorganisms also support biofuel production. Yeasts ferment sugars into ethanol, which is used as a biofuel. Anaerobic bacteria produce methane as organic matter decomposes, and that methane can be collected as biogas. Together, these microbial processes support cleaner energy and more sustainable industry.
