Introduction to Virus

I virus sono agenti infettivi submicroscopici con un nucleo di acido nucleico, DNA o RNA, racchiuso in un guscio proteico protettivo chiamato capside. Sono parassiti intracellulari obbligati, che si affidano interamente alle cellule ospiti per la replicazione e l'assemblaggio di nuove particelle virali. Alcuni virus hanno involucri lipidici derivati dalla membrana plasmatica della cellula ospite. Questi involucri incorporano proteine virali. I virus con involucro utilizzano proteine di superficie o glicoproteine per legarsi alle cellule ospiti, mentre i virus senza involucro si basano sulle proteine del capside per legarsi a recettori specifici. Struttura e Classificazione Virale
I virus sono classificati in base al tipo di acido nucleico e alle loro caratteristiche strutturali. Alcuni possiedono un ulteriore involucro lipidico derivato dalla membrana cellulare dell&#8217;ospite. Questi virus rivestiti, come il virus dell&#8217;influenza e l&#8217;HIV, utilizzano proteine di superficie specializzate o glicoproteine per riconoscere e attaccarsi a recettori specifici delle cellule ospiti. I virus privi di involucro, come il poliovirus, si affidano alle proteine capsidiche per l&#8217;adesione e l&#8217;ingresso. Meccanismi di Infezione e Replicazione

Viruses are biological entities that rely on host cells to make more copies of themselves. They do not have cells or their own metabolism, but they can show signs of life when they infect a host. Their basic structure includes a nucleic acid core, made of either DNA or RNA, surrounded by a protein coat called a capsid.

Viruses are classified by the type of nucleic acid they contain and by their structure. Some viruses also have a lipid envelope that comes from the host cell membrane. Enveloped viruses, such as influenza virus and HIV, use surface proteins or glycoproteins to recognize and bind to specific receptors on host cells. Non-enveloped viruses, including poliovirus, depend on capsid proteins for attachment and entry.

Viral genomes can be single-stranded or double-stranded, and they may be linear or circular. They also vary in the number of genes they carry. Infection begins when the virus attaches to a host cell and enters it. Enveloped viruses often fuse their envelope with the host membrane to release their genetic material.

HIV is an RNA virus that uses reverse transcriptase to turn its RNA into DNA. This DNA is called a provirus after it integrates into the host genome. That integration helps the virus maintain a persistent infection and keep replicating. DNA viruses, such as herpesviruses, use their own enzymes, including DNA polymerase, to help express viral genes and copy their DNA.

Bacteriophages infect bacterial cells and use a different entry process. Their capsid, tail sheath, and tail fibers work together to inject viral DNA directly into the bacterial cytoplasm. Viruses can infect bacteria, plants, and animals. Their replication can damage host cells, cause apoptosis or lysis, and lead to diseases ranging from mild infections to serious conditions such as AIDS and cancer. Even so, viruses also help move genes between organisms and support evolutionary change.

EXPLANATION: Discussions of DNA in earlier grades have been limited to discussions of genes and the role of genes in the appearance and activities of an organism. Biology 1 represents a student's introduction to a molecular model of a DNA as well as the organization of DNA into genes and genes subsequently into chromosomes. Students should address interactions between genes in proteins which regulate both the shape and reproduction of DNA molecules. It is important to note that not all segments of DNA are transcribed for proteins. Portions of DNA are involved in regulating the expression of genes or affect the structure of the chromosomes (replication origin, centromeres, and telomeres).
