Tale limitazione si presenta in genere quando la primitiva di una funzione &#xE8; sconosciuta oppure non pu&#xF2; essere espressa in forma chiusa. In alternativa, pu&#xF2; verificarsi quando una funzione non &#xE8; definita da una formula, bens&#xEC; da un insieme finito di punti dati empirici, come quelli raccolti durante misurazioni o esperimenti. In questi casi, le tecniche di integrazione approssimativa offrono una soluzione efficace.
Uno degli approcci pi&#xF9; diffusi consiste nell&#x2019;uso delle somme di Riemann, che stimano l&#x2019;area sottesa alla curva suddividendo l&#x2019;intervallo di integrazione in pi&#xF9; sottointervalli di uguale ampiezza. A ciascun sottointervallo si associa un rettangolo la cui altezza &#xE8; data dal valore della funzione in un punto scelto all&#x2019;interno del sottointervallo stesso. Questa interpretazione geometrica elementare consente di ottenere approssimazioni numeriche quando i metodi analitici non sono applicabili.
La scelta del punto all&#x2019;interno di ciascun sottointervallo conduce a metodi differenti. Nell&#x2019;approssimazione all&#x2019;estremo sinistro, l&#x2019;altezza di ciascun rettangolo &#xE8; determinata dal valore della funzione all&#x2019;estremo sinistro del sottointervallo. Quando la funzione &#xE8; crescente, questo metodo tende a sottostimare l&#x2019;area complessiva; quando la funzione &#xE8; decrescente, tende invece a sovrastimarla. Viceversa, l&#x2019;approssimazione all&#x2019;estremo destro utilizza il valore della funzione all&#x2019;estremo destro di ciascun sottointervallo, determinando una sovrastima per funzioni crescenti e una sottostima per funzioni decrescenti.
Queste tecniche, pur essendo elementari nella formulazione, costituiscono strumenti fondamentali dell&#x2019;analisi numerica. Esse risultano particolarmente utili nelle applicazioni scientifiche e ingegneristiche in cui gli integrali devono essere valutati a partire da misure discrete oppure nel caso di funzioni troppo complesse per un&#x2019;integrazione simbolica.

Riemann sums estimate the area under a curve when an exact definite integral is hard to find. This often happens when a function has no known antiderivative or cannot be written in a closed form. It also happens when the function comes from measured data instead of a formula.

The method works by splitting the interval of integration into equal parts. Each subinterval gets a rectangle, and the rectangle height comes from the function value at one chosen point in that part. Adding the rectangle areas gives an approximate integration result.

A left endpoint approximation uses the function value at the left end of each subinterval. For an increasing function, this method usually underestimates the total area. For a decreasing function, it usually overestimates it.

A right endpoint approximation uses the function value at the right end of each subinterval. For an increasing function, it usually overestimates the area. For a decreasing function, it usually underestimates it.

These rectangle-based estimates are simple, but they are useful in numerical analysis. They are especially helpful in science and engineering when an integral must be found from discrete measurements or when symbolic integration is not practical.
