Biopesticides use microbes like the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt, to control pests.During sporulation, Bt produces insecticidal proteins known as Cry proteins, which crystallize alongside the spores.These crystal proteins act as the primary active ingredient in Bt biopesticides.Upon insect ingestion, these crystals dissolve in the gut, releasing toxins that kill the insect.One method for Bt biopesticide production involves solid-state fermentation, where the bacterium is cultivated on nutrient-rich solids like rice bran.At the start of this process, the substrate is moistened, inoculated with Bt spores, and then loaded into a packed-bed bioreactor.Controlled temperature and aerobic conditions support the growth of Bt.As nutrients become limited, the bacteria undergo stress-induced sporulation, during which crystal proteins are produced.The crystals are purified into powders or granules for environmentally friendly field application.

Bt biopesticides use Bacillus thuringiensis to help protect crops from insect pests. Bt is a bacterium that is valued for its strong insect-killing activity, its specificity to target insects, and its natural breakdown in the environment. Because of these traits, it offers a more sustainable option than many chemical pesticides.

Bt makes insecticidal crystal proteins, also called Cry proteins, during sporulation. Sporulation is the stage when the bacterium forms spores. The Cry proteins form parasporal crystals that remain with the spores and act as the active part of the biopesticide. When susceptible insect larvae eat them, the alkaline environment in the insect midgut dissolves the crystals. The activated toxins then bind to receptors on the gut lining, form pores, and cause cell lysis, which leads to insect death.

Bt biopesticides are commonly produced by solid-state fermentation, or SSF. In this method, Bt grows on solid materials such as rice bran that are moistened and inoculated with Bt spores. The substrate is then placed in packed-bed bioreactors. Temperature and airflow are carefully controlled to keep the process aerobic and to support sporulation and crystal protein buildup.

After fermentation, the material is dried and mixed with a buffer to make a slurry. The slurry is centrifuged to separate the spore-crystal complexes. The recovered crystals are then purified and turned into powders or granules for use in agriculture. These biodegradable formulations are compatible with the environment and are considered safe for non-target organisms.
