La cardiopatia ischemica si verifica quando l'afflusso di sangue al cuore è ridotto o ostruito. Ciò porta a un apporto insufficiente di ossigeno e nutrienti, con conseguenti danni o disfunzioni del muscolo cardiaco.
La condizione è causata principalmente dall'aterosclerosi, l'accumulo di depositi di grasso, o placche, all'interno delle pareti arteriose.
Nel tempo, queste placche possono indurire e restringere le arterie, limitando il flusso sanguigno.
A volte, una placca può rompersi, innescando la formazione di un coagulo che ostruisce ulteriormente l'arteria coronaria, portando potenzialmente ad angina, infarto del miocardio, insufficienza cardiaca o morte cardiaca improvvisa.
I fattori di rischio per la cardiopatia ischemica includono età, sesso, storia familiare, fumo, ipertensione e colesterolo, obesità, diabete e stress.
