Una risposta infiammatoria è una reazione immunitaria localizzata, aspecifica, caratterizzata da arrossamento, gonfiore, calore, dolore e occasionale perdita di funzionalità.
Qualsiasi stimolo dannoso, come un'abrasione, sostanze chimiche irritanti, agenti patogeni o temperature estreme, di solito innesca la risposta infiammatoria.
Subito dopo la lesione o l'infezione, il tessuto danneggiato e le cellule immunitarie secernono sostanze chimiche infiammatorie. Ad esempio, i mastociti dei tessuti rilasciano istamina e prostaglandine nel liquido extracellulare.

These injuries damage cells and connective tissue fibers, changing the chemical composition of interstitial fluid. Damaged tissues and resident immune cells then release inflammatory chemicals that initiate the response cascade.
