Binge eating disorder is a mental health condition where individuals repeatedly consume large quantities of food in a short period, often feeling unable to control their eating behavior.
Common signs include eating quickly, consuming food even when not hungry, and often eating secretly.
These patterns frequently lead to feelings of guilt or distress afterward, which sets binge eating disorder apart from regular overeating.
Some contributing factors are a family history of eating disorders, traumatic experiences, obsessive personality, anxiety, and low self-esteem.
Additionally, societal pressures regarding body image can also increase the risk of developing this disorder.
Binge eating disorder can be managed through self-help groups and nutrition counseling by a specialist.
Individual counseling combining cognitive and behavioral therapy to change thinking patterns and behaviors is particularly effective.
Further, family therapy, which helps family members understand the eating disorder, is also an effective treatment strategy.
Finally, medications may be recommended in some cases as part of a holistic treatment approach.
