Un coagulo di sangue, o trombo, si forma all'interno dei vasi sanguigni e può bloccare il flusso sanguigno parzialmente o completamente. Questa condizione è nota come trombosi.
Se una parte del coagulo si stacca e viaggia nel flusso sanguigno, diventa un embolo.
Se l'embolo si incastra in un'arteria polmonare, può portare a un'embolia polmonare, o EP. Nella maggior parte dei casi, l'embolo ha origine da un trombo nelle vene profonde delle gambe—una condizione chiamata trombosi venosa profonda.

A thrombus is a blood clot that forms within blood vessels and can block blood flow, a condition called thrombosis. An embolus forms when part of the thrombus breaks away and travels through the bloodstream. If the embolus lodges in a pulmonary artery, it causes a pulmonary embolism.
