Employee Loans

Employee loans are amounts advanced by an employer to a worker under agreed repayment terms, and they matter because accounting must distinguish these receivables from wages and other employee benefits. In the employer’s records, the loan is generally recognized as a receivable when funds are disbursed, then reduced as the employee repays principal through payroll deductions or direct payments, while any applicable interest is recorded separately as income over time. Accurate tracking supports reconciliation of balances, payroll administration, financial reporting, internal controls, and decisions about credit policies, employee assistance, and recoverability.
