Patent Protection

Patent protection is a legal framework that grants inventors or organizations limited exclusive rights to use and commercialize an eligible invention, helping safeguard innovation and its economic value. Through a patent application, the applicant discloses the invention to a patent office, which evaluates requirements such as novelty and grants rights that can restrict others from making, using, or selling the invention within the relevant jurisdiction. In accounting, patents are generally treated as intangible assets, while related application, legal, and maintenance costs require classification under applicable accounting standards. Patent protection can therefore affect asset valuation, amortization, impairment analysis, licensing revenue, and business investment decisions.
