T10 Laminectomy

T10 laminectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the lamina, or rear portion of the vertebral arch, at the tenth thoracic vertebra to expose or decompress the spinal cord. By opening the posterior spinal canal, the procedure provides access to the thoracic cord and can relieve pressure caused by injury or other conditions. In behavioral neuroscience, T10 laminectomy is commonly used to create a controlled access point for spinal cord injury models, enabling researchers to examine how neural damage affects locomotion, coordination, and sensory responses. Consistent surgical positioning also supports reliable comparison of behavioral recovery and treatment outcomes.

Source: Kumar, S., et. al. Mouse Model of Pressure Ulcers After Spinal Cord Injury. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates a detailed induction of spinal cord injury in mice. The anesthetized mouse is dissected to expose T9-T10 vertebrae, and their spinous processes are removed. The exposed spinal cord is then transected to inflict the injury. The surgical area is then closed, and the mouse is allowed to recover.

We present a methodology for using an ultrasonic osteotome combined with a conventional osteotome for laminectomy in thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum. This is a relatively safe and easy-to-learn method that avoids the perioperative complications associated with the conventional method.
