Beta Glucuronidase Encapsulation

Beta glucuronidase encapsulation is a bioengineering strategy that confines the enzyme within a protective carrier such as a hydrogel, liposome, or polymer matrix, helping preserve activity while controlling its localization and release. The encapsulated enzyme catalyzes hydrolysis of glucuronide bonds, converting glucuronide substrates into their corresponding aglycones; carrier properties such as porosity, degradation rate, and chemical stability regulate substrate access and enzyme retention. This approach supports controlled prodrug activation, localized therapeutic delivery, biosensor development, and biocatalysis, while providing a platform for tuning enzyme lifetime and reducing unwanted exposure in engineered biological systems.

A method for photo-encapsulation of cells in a crosslinked PEG hydrogel is described. Hypoxic signaling within encapsulated murine insulinoma (MIN6) aggregates is tracked using a fluorescent marker system. This system allows serial examination of cells within a hydrogel scaffold and correlation of hypoxic signaling with changes in cell phenotype.

2025

This video demonstrates a method for fabricating polymer microbeads that encapsulate neurotoxic amyloid-beta-secreting cells. The cell-polymer suspension is processed through a microbead fabrication device, with polymer gelation achieved via calcium cross-linking, forming spherical microbeads around the cells. The polymer allows cell proliferation while allowing controlled, long-term amyloid-beta release, simulating its accumulation in Alzheimer's disease.

Beta

2024

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...
