Functional Assessment

Functional assessment is the systematic evaluation of how a biological system, engineered device, or bioengineered construct performs its intended role. It works by defining measurable functional endpoints, applying controlled stimuli or operating conditions, and comparing observed responses with expected performance or reference controls. In bioengineering, assessments may examine cell behavior, tissue activity, biomaterial performance, or device operation using quantitative assays and physiological measurements. These evaluations help validate designs, identify failure modes, guide optimization, and determine whether engineered systems are suitable for research, therapeutic development, or clinical translation.

The primary outcome measure in clinical trials for neuromuscular disorders is generally improved muscle function. Therefore, assessing the effect of potential therapeutic compounds on muscle performance pre clinically in mouse models is of great importance. We here describe several functional tests to address this.
