Mineral Catalysis

Mineral catalysis is the acceleration of chemical reactions by naturally occurring or synthetic mineral phases, whose surfaces or metal ions provide reactive sites. In biological and prebiotic settings, dissolved molecules can adsorb to mineral surfaces, where charge, pore structure, hydration, and redox-active centers concentrate reactants, orient them, and stabilize transition states, lowering the energy required for bond formation or electron transfer. These processes help explain how minerals influence nutrient cycling, biomineralization, and the transformation of organic compounds, while informing research on enzyme-free catalysis, environmental remediation, and chemical pathways relevant to the emergence of life.

Catalysis

The presence of a catalyst affects the rate of a chemical reaction. A catalyst is a substance that can increase the reaction rate without being consumed during the process. A basic comprehension of a catalysts’ role during chemical reactions can be understood from the concept of reaction mechanisms and energy diagrams. The illustrated image represents the reaction diagrams for an endothermic chemical process progressing in the absence (red curve) and presence (blue curve) of a catalyst. Both...

Catalysis influences the rate of chemical reactions by providing an alternative reaction pathway with lower activation energy. A catalyst speeds up a reaction, but it is not consumed during the process. The fundamental principle of catalysis is the ability of a catalyst to alter the reaction mechanism, often introducing a more efficient pathway than the uncatalyzed process. In a catalyzed reaction, the catalyst participates directly in the reaction mechanism. It interacts with reactants to form...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Ryan Richards — Colorado School of Mines Catalysis is among the most important fields of modern technology and presently accounts for approximately 35% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and sustenance of approximately 33% of the global population through fertilizers produced via the Haber process.1 Catalysts are systems that facilitate chemical reactions by lowering the activation energy and influencing the selectivity. Catalysis will be a central technology in...

Heterogeneous Catalysis

Heterogeneous catalysis involves a catalyst in a different phase from the reactants. It is a process where the catalyst and the reactants are in distinct phases, typically solid and gas or liquid. Most heterogeneous catalysts are metals, metal oxides, or acids. The list includes transition metals like iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), tungsten (W), silver (Ag), and copper (Cu). These metals possess partially vacant d orbitals that...

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals include various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. These properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This video examines several physical properties that are useful in field and hand sample mineral...
