Postoperative Animal Care

Postoperative animal care is the structured management of animals after surgery to support recovery, minimize pain, and prevent complications. It involves observing vital signs and behavior, providing prescribed analgesia and supportive care, maintaining wound hygiene, and adjusting housing or activity according to the procedure and species. In biological research, consistent postoperative monitoring promotes animal welfare while reducing stress-related effects that can influence physiology and experimental results. Careful documentation of recovery, complications, and treatment responses also helps researchers assess surgical outcomes, refine protocols, and meet ethical and institutional requirements for the responsible use of animals.

The subretinal implantation of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) is one of the most promising approaches for the treatment of degenerative retinal diseases. However, the performance of preclinical studies on large-eye animal models remains challenging. This report presents guidelines for the subretinal transplantation of RPE on a cell carrier into minipigs.
