Snowshoe Hare

The snowshoe hare is a North American lagomorph adapted to boreal and montane forests, where it plays an important role as both herbivore and prey. Its oversized hind feet distribute body weight across snow, while seasonal moulting changes its coat from brown in summer to white in winter for camouflage; these changes are influenced largely by day length. Snowshoe hares feed on leaves, twigs, bark, and other vegetation, linking plant communities with predators such as lynx, foxes, and raptors. Studying their population cycles, habitat use, and seasonal camouflage helps explain predator-prey dynamics and assess how climate change may disrupt winter adaptation.

Fitness Widespread variation of phenotypes in natural populations provides the raw material for evolution, which is the change in the inherited traits of populations over successive generations. Natural selection is one of the main mechanisms of evolution and requires variable traits to be heritable and associated with differential survival and/or reproductive success. Phenotypes that correlate with greater success will have more offspring that survive to reproduce in the next generation, and...

Biology is a natural science that studies life and living organisms, including their structure, function, development, interactions, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. The field's scope is extensive and divided into several specialized disciplines, such as anatomy, physiology, ethology, genetics, and many more. All living things share a few key traits, including cellular organization, heritable genetic material and the ability to adapt/evolve, metabolism to regulate energy needs, the...

In this manuscript, we provide a comprehensive protocol for assessing antibiotic survival for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, transforming plasmids into P. aeruginosa and S. aureus to create reporter strains and visualize phenotypic variants, such as persisters, by time-lapse epifluorescence microscopy.

Community Diversity - Concepts

Populations do not live in isolation; thus, every population interacts with others in certain ways. These interactions give rise to a network of populations. Hence, an ecological community is composed of such population networks of various species interacting with each other within the same area. These biological, or biotic, components may also closely interact with non-living, or abiotic, components, forming an ecosystem. Ecosystems may be as small as the microbial communities inside the human...

This protocol presents a detailed approach to replicating a murine model of hyperlipidemia-induced heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). The design combines the administration of adeno-associated virus 9-cardiac troponin T-low-density lipoprotein receptor (AAV9-cTnT-LDLR) and poloxamer-407 (P-407).
