Sodium Chloride

Sodium chloride is an ionic compound composed of sodium and chloride ions, commonly known as table salt, that supports essential biological functions while becoming harmful at excessive concentrations. In water, it dissociates into Na+ and Cl−, enabling electrical neutrality, osmotic balance, membrane potential, and nerve and muscle activity; sodium gradients are maintained largely by the Na+/K+ ATPase. In biology, sodium chloride solutions help maintain isotonic conditions in cell and tissue experiments, while controlled changes in salinity reveal how organisms regulate water and ions. Studying its effects informs physiology, microbiology, ecology, and clinical laboratory practice.

Regulation of Sodium and Potassium

2024

The regulation of sodium and potassium ion concentrations in the human body is a complex process governed primarily by hormones such as aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). Sodium Regulation Sodium ions make up approximately 90% of extracellular cations, with a normal blood plasma concentration of 136–148 mEq/L. A decrease in blood volume and pressure triggers the release of renin from granular cells in the juxtaglomerular complex (JGC), primarily in...
